Feeling Appreciated

Assistant Head David  Maher told a beautiful story in
Friday's morning meeting, and he showed a short video to go along with it. The video showed an experiment performed by a Japanese scientist who took three identical beakers, half-filled with rice and water, and put them on three separate shelves. During a period of ninety days he approached each beaker and talked to the rice. Using friendly tones, he told the first beaker of rice how much he loved it. The second he aggressively told how much he hated, and everything that was wrong with it, and the third he simply ignored. By the end of the three-month period the first batch of rice was fermenting nicely, on its way to producing rice wine. The second was pretty much inactive and showing no signs of fermentation, and the third . . . ? The third had grown black mold!

This week, we faculty and staff feel like the rice in the first beaker. The appreciation shown to us by you all has been overwhelming: every day something new. We have been pampered with breakfast, flowers, chocolate, cosmetics, massage vouchers, lunch, and more.

So, thank you all. We appreciate the appreciation!

On behalf of myself and my colleagues.

A Message From The Advocates for Diversity Club

The Advocates for Diversity (AFD) club is starting an initiative to help students learn how to be good advocates/allies on campus with the "I Am Message." The purpose is to give students a voice (anonymously) in situations where they might feel offended and uncomfortable confronting when they see or hear something derogatory against a specific group (race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, class, ability, etc) whether it was towards you, a friend, or just someone around you. We will read these for you during morning meeting to help create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Click the button below for the anonymous form. It is a way of having your voice heard in hopes to end inappropriate and derogatory comments and/or activity on campus. Bookmark this form in case you ever want to fill one out. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Home and Homeless Mixed Media Project

Donations were accepted during and after the art show with gifts of student artists' unique "Home" pillows. Families and friends of our students will donate $520.00 to Harbor Interfaith to support family and homeless services in our community.

In February, Art students were given an opportunity to showcase their work in the
findings art gallery in San Pedro, California. Our theme was
Memories of Home and we explored not only our memories but looked at the situation of those without homes in our area. A collaborative project with Mixed Media students created an installation of "Hearts for the Homeless".
We continued. Knowing the power and value of art to make a statement and effect change, students created collograph fabric prints that became throw pillows as part of a fundraising event at the RHP/REN student art show.
Donations were accepted during and after the art show with gifts of student artists' unique "Home" pillows. Students, teachers, families, and friends raised $520.00 in donations for Harbor Interfaith (click the button below to view their site) to support family and homeless services in our community.   A heartfelt thank you to everyone for their contributions!

Aubrey Sereno

"  I think we should all be more like dogs. We should bloom into being bold like Lily. We should not let our past get in the way of what the good in our future holds like Auggie. We should let the weird sides that we all have  show  like Lola does, and we should show those who are important to us that we love them, like Bebe."

Garrett Han

" Courage is the ability to overcome fear, to have strength when confronted with pain or grief or failure. That is the most important thing I've learned from my time here at RHP & REN and that is what I want to leave here with you all. Don't listen to that voice in your head that says you can't do it. Listen to the people here that care about you and will encourage you to follow your dreams and help you find the dreams you didn't even know you had yet. Have courage."

On Tuesday, the school celebrated diversity by holding a Pride celebration that honors the LGBTQ+ community.

The Performing Arts Showcase held on Thursday was an evening that highlighted the enormous pool of talent on campus. Additionally, graduating seniors were honored for their efforts in performance-driven programs.

Dr. Taurozzi's chemistry classes had a packed week of experiments ranging from synthesis to decomposition reactions.

The Varsity Tennis team had a stellar outing on Thursday full of first time players and several wins in various categories. Great job Huskies Tennis!

Ms. Hall's ASL II students practiced communication required for grocery shopping and other transaction-driven exchanges.

Ms. Begley's 8th grade students built roller coasters used to illustrate topics in their unit on motion. They will be calculating speed and acceleration at different points of the coaster as a part of the lesson.

7th grade Spanish students worked on conjugation by creating songs about "boot verbs."
