Moves and Appointments

Revd Tom Lusty,
Te am Vicar in the Headingley Team Ministry; to be  Vicar of St Giles, Bramhope (part-time) (Leeds EA) 

Tens of thousands of knitted poppies have this year been used to create moving remembrance displays in churches across the diocese.  As the country commemorates the Armistice 100 years ago, 11am, on November 11 1918, the displays have appeared on cathedrals and churches large and small. An internationally-renowned German choir will be welcomed at two diocesan events to mark the the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.  The Madchenchor Hanover (Hanover Girls' Choir) will perform at Halifax Minster in a free concert, on Saturday, November 10 and then take  part in the Remembrance Day service at Ripon Cathedral on the morning of November 11. More than 33,000 social action projects - from food banks to debt counselling - are run or supported by churches, according to figures setting out for the first time the full scale of the Church of England's service to communities. And in  the Diocese of Leeds , many churches are running foodbanks and support organisations - a series of videos made last year capture some of the work being done locally. More local schools could be heading to three churches in Leeds and Dewsbury after they were awarded the Schools Welcome Badge.  Dewsbury Minster, Thornhill Parish Church and Leeds Minster were recently given the Schools Welcome Badge to recognise faith communities in West Yorkshire offering quality schools' visits.  Find out more about the award here 
On a night for ghouls, ghosts, witches and everything dark, churches across the diocese opened their doors to those wanting to celebrate the light this Halloween.  Rather than ignoring the annual celebration, many churches have hosted Light Parties that offer an upbeat alternative and a reminder of the fundamental Christian message that there is always light to be found in the darkness - More here
Fun-running couple Wendy Lawson and Alex Griffin are to marry en route as they take part in this year's Skipton Santa Fun Run at the end of the month.  Both from Ingleton, they have have chosen Sunday, November 25 - Alex's birthday - which falls on the day of the run. Read more here

A morning of encouragement for those involved in leading a Fresh Expressions takes place on Saturday 10 November at the  Chantry Hall in Bedale to meet fellow leaders, share experiences, pray and learn. S peakers are Bishop Chris Edmondson and  Karin Shaw, Leeds Diocese Fresh Expressions Coordinator. Find out more here.
November 11 2018 marks the centenary of the Armistice. Cathedrals and churches across the diocese are holding exhibitions, special events, concerts and remembrance services and a round-up page with some of these has been created. View news and events around the centenary here

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will give the annual Harold Wilson Lecture next month - 'Purpose in Politics' at an event supported by the diocese at the University of Huddersfield.  Gordon Brown was Labour Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010. Bishop  of Huddersfield, Jonathan Gibbs said the event on November 12 promised to be fascinating and relevant. Read more here
The Reformation and Brexit is the topical subject of  a lecture by the Revd Professor Dr Charlotte Methuen  which she will give at St Mark's Harrogsate on Saturday 17 November as part of the Harrogate School of Theology and Mission series. The lecture is open to all and you can read more here 
Church Explorers is a network for those  working to promote the architectural and archaeological importance of church buildings in Yorkshire. They aim to encourage people to visit and value our  wonderful historic buildings.  A network event takes placed in York on Wednesday 21 November at 6.30pm and all are welcome. Find out more here
Ripon Cathedral's Christmas Gift and Food Fair has grown from strength to strength and takes place  on Saturday 24 November from  9.30am - 4.30pm. With more than  80 stalls. It's a great place to stock up for Christmas. Details here 
Wakefield Cathedral is hosting a regional conference on sustainable church heating and lighting and churchwardens and others concerned about offering a warm welcome in their church buildings are encouraged to attend. It takes place on Saturday 1 December from 10am to 4pm  More details here
Spring Harvest, the national teaching and worship conference returns for a second year to Harrogate from April 13 to 17. Next year the conference will be celebrating its 40th birthday, and as well as offering  inspirational teaching and worship there are also extensive children and youth activities. Find out more here
Areas AROUND THE AREAS
Martin House is planning its first Light up a Life service at Bradford Cathedral this year in partnership with Bishop Toby and the cathedral team.  The event is an opportunity for anyone who has lost a child to gather together to remember them in the company of members of the hospice team who cared for them.  It is taking place on Wednesday 12 December at 7pm, and everyone is welcome.  More on Martin House's website here
A new community scheme, Calderdale Chaplains, has been launched at the Piece Hall in Halifax, and will equip and support local Christians to provide prayerful care and help to communities across Calderdale.  The scheme will see volunteers out and about in businesses, town centres and visitor attractions. There are many ways to celebrate an upcoming 75th birthday but  Fr John, a monk from The Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield, plans to celebrate his 75th birthday by running 10k for charity. More here 
A stunning 'Poppy Cascade' display for Remembrance outside Otley Parish Church is turning heads in the town as it  begins commemorations of  the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.  Sixteen thousand poppies have been knitted by local people and are now covering walls and spilling into the churchyard and beyond. With the main northern presence of the British Army falling in the Ripon Episcopal Area, Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley, the Area Bishop of Ripon, has been visiting Catterick Garrison to see their work with schoolchildren, find out about expansion plans and meet the chaplaincy team. More here 
On the 100th anniversary of his death, a walk from Ripon Cathedral around the city to commemorate poet Wilfred Owen has been broadcast by the BBC. More here 
Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling, has welcomed  the new statistics which show an increase in Christmas attendances at cathedrals across the country, and, writing in the Yorkshire Post, says the rise is reflected at Wakefield Cathedral. "Since the renewal of the interior in 2015 attendance at Christmas services has increased by over 14 per cent." Read more on the figures here

"Take responsibility for your discipleship ...join the online learning community" urged Bishop Nick at the close of June's Diocesan Lay Conference. The Digital Learning Platform is full of new courses and information - and you can join up now by visiting it and registering here
A 12 week course being led in 4 different locations starts in  January. Ever wondered what theology means and how to study it? Need some guidance on how to dig a bit deeper? This introductory course may well be for you. Topics covered include: Understanding the Bible, study skills, your own faith journey and exploring prayer and worship. More details 
A new book from Bishop Colin Buchanon explores the work of ARCIC on efforts to reach agreement between Anglicans and Roman Catholics over the Eucharist. Bishop Colin is able to send books at a discount to anyone who is interested in the subject - find out more here 
Ecclesiastic Insurance has recently revised it's advice on keeping churches open during the week. In the new guidelines they make it clear that opening your church for visitors will not affect insurance premiums and say that they positively encourage churches to 'unlock their visitor potential'. Christmas may seem ages away but the CofE nationally has announced it's 2018 Advent and Christmas campaign, #FollowTheStar. This builds on the work from last year's #GodWithUs campaign and includes a wide range of resources and publicity material . Details here
The Real Advent Calendar 2018 is out now and the new design provides a great way to share the Christmas story.  The calendar comes with a 24 page Christmas story-activity book and behind each of the 25 windows is part of the Christmas story and a festive Fairtrade milk chocolate. More details here
