Big Thinking is back!  Our first Big Thinking event of the 2020/2021 season, presented in partnership with CIFAR, will feature political philosopher Will Kymlicka with response by Yasmeen Abu-Laban. The lecture is entitled Perceptions of humanity and of membership: Two challenges of inclusion and exclusion in Canada and will take place online on October 6 starting at 12:30 pm ET. Launch of the Congress Advisory Committee on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EDID): As announced on July 30, this committee of experts, chaired by Dr. Malinda S. Smith, will help the Federation identify and address barriers to equitable, diversely and inclusive participation in Congress and other events. Read more.
Launch of the Task Force on Congress Contingency Planning: Also announced on July 30, the Task Force will provide recommendations to the Federation following an assessment of risks for Congress 2021 and future Congresses. The Task Force has since met four times and one clear outcome from the preliminary discussions is that we need to plan in advance for a Congress during which people can participate virtually. Submit a nominee for the Governor General Innovation awards! The Federation is a nominating partner for the 2021 Governor General Innovation awards. The objectives of the awards are to celebrate excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society and inspire Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators. Deadline to submit your nomination: September 25. Fill out the recommendation form.

Professor Santa J. Ono reappointed as president and vice-chancellor of UBC: Professor Ono has been appointed to a second five-year term as President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of British Columbia, the university announced recently. Read more. 
UBCO researcher looks at food security during COVID-19Joanne Taylor is currently a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council postdoctoral fellow in the department of economics, philosophy, and political science at UBC's Okanagan campus. Read more.
UQAM School of languages receives donation of more than 800 Spanish-language books: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ecuadorian Consulate General in Montréal had to close its doors permanently, but they decided to donate their library of more than 800 literature, history and sociology books in Spanish to UQAM. SSHRC announces the 2019-20 Insight Development Grants recipients: The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has awarded over $32 million to more than 1,045 researchers from 69 Canadian institutions, resulting from the 2019-20 Insight Development Grants competition. Canada Council Molson award competition for 2021: The Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prizes are awarded to two persons - one in the arts and the other in the social sciences and humanities, who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding achievements. Deadline: November 1. Read more.
