Fall Service Day
Each year, Ashwood students take on a variety community service projects. Sarah Ewing coordinates the day, and she works hard to match community needs with class abilities so that students not only have the opportunity to give, but to do it joyfully. This year,  Class 2-3 visited the Knox County Center for Long Term Care where they danced and sang, recited poetry, and gave handmade cards to the residents.  Class 4-5 spent the day in Ashwood's wood shop creating scratching posts and pads for the feline residents of PAWS Animal Adoption Center in Rockport. And  Class 6-7 had a grand time  wielding  power tools at the Habitat for Humanity worksite.  Visit  Facebook and our website  for more pictures.

The Enormous Turnip
This week the children have been hearing the story of the Enormous Turnip. A farmer who loves to eat turnips decides to plant an entire field of them. After waiting all summer for the turnips to grow, he finally goes out one autumn day to harvest them, but there is only one single turnip in the field. When he tries to pull it from the ground, the turnip won't budge. He calls for help from his wife and their farm animals, and eventually they are all able to pull together and get that enormous turnip out of the ground. The turnip is so big that it feeds them all through the winter.

During our mornings outside, the children have been busy building and helping in the garden. We've been preparing our pumpkin patch for garlic to be planted. The children help dig up rocks and pull out tree roots weaving through the bed. We even had a really strong root that needed many friends to pull on together. It's always fun to observe how the children transform our stories into their work and play. On this particular day an older child pulled on the root and had her friends each pull behind her in a line, just as the farmers and animals did in the story.

All Hallows' Eve Walk:  Friday, October 26
Each year, Ashwood offers the All Hallows' Eve Walk as a gift to the young and young-at-heart of midcoast Maine. This magical
festival is an alternative to traditional trick-or-treat activities, giving tots and school-aged children an enchanted evening of twinkling lights and woodland surprises, as Ashwood's campus is transformed into a place where fluting fairies dance in treetops, and the Owl and the Pussycat sing under the moon.

Please note that the mood is festive, not scary (although visitors may encounter a large spider at walk's end!). Everyone is encouraged to come in costume. There will be two guided walks during the evening. Between the first and second walks, there will be story times for younger children and for those ages 9-14 years. Music and a bonfire round out the evening. To preserve the enchanted mood of the event we kindly ask that there be no flash photography, flashlights, or cell phones. Hard rain or thunder cancels.

Friday's forecast is calling for a dry but  cold evening. Please dress accordingly.

Moving the kiosk!

Heartfelt Thanks for Some Amazing Volunteers
Did you notice that our campus looks even more beautiful this week than ever? Heartfelt thanks go to all of the amazing volunteers who spent Saturday moving the kiosk, putting gardens to bed, cleaning up the woodland trails, making tree faces for All Hallows' Eve this coming Friday, cleaning up under the big pine tree, and providing coffee and snacks for all of the hard workers. Many hands accomplished these projects, small and large. I am filled with gratitude to all of the wonderful parents, friends, and staff who made this happen. Thank you to each and every one of you.

Scarlet's cityscape

Perspective Drawing
Perspective drawing turned out to be one of my favorite blocks.
We worked with several new tools, such as the t-square and triangle. Using these tools, I found that I had to be very on-point in order to get an accurate drawing. When I finished each drawing, I enjoyed looking at its 3-dimensional form. One of the drawings we did during this block was a cityscape. It was definitely one of the more challenging drawings, but when I finished, I felt very accomplished and proud. This project took time and effort, but I think everyone was satisfied  and happy at the end.
