Chairman's Message: The Mar-a-Lago U.S.-Japan Summit
In a new Chairman's Message, written shortly after the April 17 and April 18 meetings at Mar-a-Lago between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Donald Trump, Sasakawa USA Chairman Admiral Dennis Blair encourages a closer look at the summit's formal communique. Blair believes it shows clearly that the United States and Japan are united on the big security issues that both countries face.
"The statement from the latest U.S.-Japan summit this week gives a clear picture of the policies of two of the three most powerful countries in the world working out the issues between them and united on the challenges that both face," Admiral Blair writes.

Upcoming Event: Fifth Annual Security Forum is May 2
Sasakawa USA's Fifth Annual Security Forum will take place at the Willard InterContinental in Washington D.C. on May 2, 2018. This day-long conference will bring together a range of experts from government, business, academia, and think tanks to discuss Asian security from the context of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Speakers include Ambassador Shinsuke Sugiyama, Japan's new ambassador to the United States; Robert Work, Former Deputy Secretary of Defense; and Admiral Dennis Blair, Chairman of Sasakawa USA and former Director of National Intelligence.

New Analysis: Abe avoids the FTA trap at Mar-a-Lago, but U.S. pressure on Japan likely to mount
Tobias Harris, Fellow for Economy, Trade and Business, writes about the economic implications of last week's Abe-Trump negotiations, in a new analysis on the Sasakawa USA website. Abe once again deflected demands for FTA negotiations, Harris writes. Instead, the United States and Japan agreed to launch a new dialogue that will likely focus on sector-specific market access issues and the bilateral trade balance.

The event will consider the results of the recent inter-Korean summit, the implications of the North Korea-China summit, the role of the U.S.-Japan summit, the prospects for the upcoming historic summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-un, and how all of these summits potentially fit together.

We're Hiring: Associate Research Fellow and JUMP Director
Sasakawa USA is seeking an Associate Research Fellow and Director, Japan-U.S. Military Program (JUMP) to lead JUMP and provide substantive, programmatic and administrative support for our tabletop military exercises and other research programs in U.S.-Japan relations. This would be a great role for a veteran. Candidates should have experience living and working in Japan.
The deadline for applications is May 1, 2018.

Accepting Submissions: Sasakawa USA Forum
The Sasakawa USA Forum is currently accepting submissions for Fall/Winter 2018-2019. Submissions should be 750 to 2,000 words in length and written on issues that previously have been inadequately covered regarding Japan or U.S.-Japan relations from a bilateral, regional, and global context.
