REFLECTING ON 150 YEARS IN
THE DIOCESE OF UTAH
|
|
As we observe our heritage in this, our 151st year of the Episcopal Church in Utah, we continue to reflect on our history through photos. This photo was taken in 1951 just after Christmas. It is hard to see the details of his face, but Ute Chief Poowegup is pictured holding a peace pipe in front of St. Elizabeth's, which was at that time a mission church.
As we begin the New Year, let us hold a prayer in our hearts that 2019 will be one of peace and continued growth for St. Elizabeth's, the people of the diocese, the wider church, our nation and the world.

The Souper Bowl of Caring is Back!
|
The diocese of Utah has committed to repeat one of the most successful outreach events in recent diocesan history. It is the popular Souper Bowl of Caring!
Once again, there will be matching funds made available to congregations to support this food and donation campaign that serves our local communities.
This year's
Souper Bowl of Caring
takes place January 14 through February 3 (the Sunday of the Super Bowl). Congregations and ministries, please report to
The Rev. Terri Heyduk
which local cause you have decided to contribute to.
The diocese will be registered as one group, so individual congregations and ministries need not register. Reporting of food items and monetary donations should be reported to
The Rev. Terri Heyduk
no later than February 10th. Shortly thereafter the match amount for congestion/ministries will be calculated.

Living Nativity at St. Paul's Vernal
|
As we have just completed the joyous Christmas season, one unique observation needs noting.
The members of St. Paul’s in Vernal treated the city to the annual tradition of a living nativity. The observation has become a “must see” for many in the Uintah Basin. The December 21
st
event featured both humans and farm animals. The congregation also dressed in period clothes as they sang Christmas hymns and read the Biblical accounts of the Holy Night.

The Rev. Christoper Szarke's Celebration of a New Ministry
|
On Saturday, January 5th, St. James held a Celebration of New Ministry for The Rev. Christopher Szarke.
The service was well-attended by many from throughout the diocese.
It is an exciting time for St. James to have The Rev. Szarke's new ministry officially recognized.
As Bishop Scott B. Hayashi aptly stated in his sermon, "Today we celebrate the good news that St. James has finished its sojourn in the wilderness."
The service was also livestreamed so that those who could not attend could participate. Next week, it will be available for anyone who would like to watch it on the
diocesan YouTube channel.
