The Nicholas Institute is "heartbroken at the loss of our good friend, Jim Rogers," writes Executive Director Tim Profeta. "His passing ... leaves a void in the Institute's leadership, on our campus, and across the world of energy and the environment. It is not a void that can ever truly be filled." James E. Rogers served on the Nicholas Institute's Board of Advisors since its founding in 2005. The former CEO and chairman of Duke Energy and author of Lighting the World: Transforming Our Energy Future by Bringing Electricity to Everyone (St. Martin's Press, 2015), he was also the very first Rubenstein Fellow at Duke University. "Jim was a great mind, a great leader, and a great operator in the best sense of the word. And to so many, he was also a great friend. His disarming manner, boundless energy, amiable Kentucky accent, graciousness, and quick wit made every exchange with Jim a delight." He will be deeply missed by the institute and by his family and many friends.

Several Nicholas Institute staff took part in the expert stakeholder workshop, "Looking Ahead--Big Challenges in 2019," including Tim Profeta, Executive Director; Kate Konschnik, Director, Climate and Energy Program; and Jennifer Chen, Senior Counsel, Federal Energy Policy. The event was a joint venture by the Nicholas Institute and the Great Plains Institute to provide an expert workshop for state officials and stakeholders to explore recent energy and environmental policy developments in the PJM region and the potential challenges in 2019. The event took place on December 13 in Washington, DC. An archive of the livestream can be viewed at the Nicholas Institute website.

PETER COLOHAN, INTERNET OF WATER DIRECTOR

Peter Colohan has been named the first Executive Director to lead the Internet of Water, working to realize the vision of connecting water data for sustainability. Peter will be responsible for leading the Internet of Water's efforts to build and strengthen connections between water data providers, support making public data more discoverable and accessible, and empower its use for decision making. Peter comes to us from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) where he served as the Director of Service Innovation and Partnership at the Office of Water Prediction.
