President's Message

Looking Forward to an Amazing 2019!

Happy 2019! Veterinary rehabilitation is a rapidly expanding field, and I am excited and honored to be the AARV president for this year. I would first like to recognize our outgoing board members - Tammy Perkins Johnson, Dawn Hickey, and Cara Blake - for their years of service and hard work and a very special thanks to our outgoing president Megan Ridley for her outstanding leadership in 2018. The AARV would also like to welcome our newest board members, Tari Kern as our treasurer, Katie Neforos as our membership coordinator, Sandra Gregory as our technician liaison and Theresa Pancotto as our legislative liaison.

The first item on the AARV agenda is the VMX conference in Orlando. On January 21st, we will sponsor an entire day of rehabilitation and sports medicine lectures. During the lunch break, we will have Blair Hoosier, our student grant winner, present her case study, have our annual meeting on the goals of the AARV for 2019, present the John C. Sherman award to Dr. Pedro Rivera, the APRVT will give us their annual update and lots of raffles prizes! So, grab some lunch and come join us with your ideas and feedback - we are your association and we want to hear from you. In addition, the AARV will also have a booth in the exhibit hall ... stop on by and introduce yourself!

Congratulations are in order for our first-ever ACVSMR resident grant winner, Dr. Leslie Eide. Dr. Eide will present her research on the "Effects of Strength and Conditioning Exercises on Canine Flyball Performance" at VMX in 2021. This was our first year to offer this grant, and we are excited for this opportunity for those members who are pursuing board certification with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR).

Starting in 2019 is the launch of our searchable database for our articles of interest. Now, you will be able to search for a specific topic or author. This was a requested feature from our membership and we are very happy to make it a reality. Finding information will now be that much easier.

As always, we are profoundly grateful for our generous educational sponsors - Canine Rehabilitation Institute, Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips, The Honest Kitchen, Partners in Veterinary Therapeutics, PulseVet, Purina, Respond Systems, and Royal Canin - and we hope to continue to foster these important relationships.

Please reach out if there is anything this association can do for you, and I look forward to an amazing 2019.

Past President's Message

Happy 2019!

It's been an honor serving as the AARV President in 2018. We've had a busy, successful year, and I'm excited to continue working with the Board in 2019. Dr. Amber Ihrke will be taking over the reins as Prez. Please join me in welcoming her into her new role.

I would like to thank the outgoing Board members Dr. Cara Blake, Dr. Tammy Perkins Johnson and Dawn Hickey. Their dedication and hard work have been invaluable. I'd also like to welcome our new board members Katie Neforos (Membership Chair), Dr. Theresa Pancotto (Legislative Liaison), Dr. Tari Kern (Treasurer) and Sandra Gregory (Technician Liaison). We're excited to have them on board.

We accomplished a lot in 2018! We had an unprecedented four grants, a membership perk which we are very proud of: Purdue University veterinary student Blair Hooser won an all-expenses paid trip to VMX 2019 sponsored by Royal Canin to present her case study; Drs. Andrea Henderson and Cara Blake each won a $2,500 grant (sponsored by AARV and Purina) and they will present their research at VMX 2020; and lastly, Dr. Leslie Eide won our newest, AARV-sponsored $5,000 grant for an alternative track ACVSMR resident and will present her research at VMX 2021. We had a large presence at three conferences - VMX, AVMA and the World Summit. And lastly, our membership numbers skyrocketed.

Thanks so much for being such active AARV members and for helping us achieve these goals! I look forward to even more accomplishments in 2019. Don't forget to give us feedback! Our goal is to serve our members and make them proud to call themselves AARVers.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2019!

Best,

Search the New AARV Articles of Interest Database!

AARV is excited to announce the launch of its searchable Articles of Interest Database, available to AARV members in the Members Area of its website.

The database starts with articles from the July 2018 Articles of Interest and contains approximately 100 articles. We will keep adding more articles to the database each month. We also will continue to include links to our past Articles of Interest from 2010-2018 in PDF format. All Articles of Interest have been selected by AARV founder Dr. Julia Tomlinson because of their relevance to the field of veterinary rehabilitation.

To search the database, log in to the Members Area of the website and go to the Articles of Interest Database page. Enter a keyword, author's name, or other search term to begin your search. A list of matching article abstracts will be displayed. A link to the full version of the journal article will be provided if available.

AARV will continue to add journal articles to the database each month to develop its usefulness as a research tool. Our thanks to Dr. Julia Tomlinson for selecting relevant journal articles each month.

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Welcome in the New, But Don't Ignore the Old

by Sandy Gregory, M Ed, RVT, CCRA
AARV Technician Liaison

The majority of patients we see for rehabilitation will have neurological, orthopedic, or other various conditions or injuries. It's the aging ones that we don't see enough of. Aging isn't a disease but a process of multiple changes with the organ systems. Every pet will age. Every pet will have metabolic and physical differences. No matter what we see them for, we can help as they go though the aging transitions.

While we are familiar with the therapeutic exercises, consider postural and environmental assistance. "Sit up straight while you eat your dinner!" is what our parents always told us. During the couple of minutes it takes to eat breakfast and dinner, this is a perfect chance for good posture with some muscle memory for support. Stacking the limbs under the joints, neutral spine and a raised food bowl, allows for that corrected stance.
  1. Go around to each limb, slightly picking it up off the ground and hold for a couple of seconds. Repeat a few times while continuing to support the trunk. This will help to even out the weight distribution and assist in strengthening the limbs.

  2. "Cat stretches" will help lengthen and stretch the spinal muscles. Start by placing your fingers interlaced under the chest. Slowly move your hands along the ventral chest and abdomen toward the tail while gently lifting up. This provides quick results to those lordotic spines.

  3. Finish with a few gentle nudges to the hips to engage some core stability and muscle contraction to hold that stance.
Making some environmental changes can have a huge, positive impact on an aging pet.
  1. One consideration is to raise the food and water bowls. Simply placing it between the elbow and shoulder level can help distribute the weight more evenly through the limbs. Especially taking some stress off of the elbows and cervical.

  2. Older pets should be provided with nonskid surfaces while eating or moving about the house. Proprioception deficits and decreased strength makes them have to work harder just to stay on their feet.

  3. Minimize the use of stairs by providing ramps. Stair work requires more flexion and extension than pets might be able to do with comfort. Ramps allow them to go at a stride that is comfortable to them while keeping their confidence.

Look at the feet too.

  1. Long hair between the pads of the feet can create less traction.

  2. Nails that are too long will throw off their balance and alignment. Dogs have to shift their weight back to accommodate for the longer nails.
The more we can provide assistance in properly getting them on their feet, the more they will age with grace and confidence.
