Murphy Offers Loan Aid, Intern Funding to Keep STEM Students and Jobs in NJ
NJ Spotlight

To help keep STEM scholars in New Jersey after graduation, Gov. Phil Murphy is proposing two state-funded programs to address the affordability issue head-on for those pursuing careers in the coveted sector. The first initiative is designed to aid New Jersey students seeking degrees related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) who commit to working here after they graduate by forgiving up to $8,000 of their student-loan debt.  READ MORE

BPU: NJ's Offshore Wind Plan Getting International Attention
ROI-NJ

New Jersey is getting attention as one of the first states to push for an aggressive offshore wind plan, thanks to Gov. Phil Murphy.  The BPU has been in conversation with the Danish embassy and others who have "suddenly discovered New Jersey is a player as far as offshore wind is concerned," he said.  In addition, New Jersey was recognized at the  US Offshore Wind 2018  conference and exhibition, organized by New Energy Update and held in Boston this week. Elisabeth Treseder, senior regulatory adviser for Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted, and Kenneth Sheehan from the BPU were on the panel to discuss New Jersey's development plan - including "how new leadership in New Jersey will ensure that offshore wind advances rapidly and expands its mandate to 3,500 MW of capacity," according to the agenda.

New Jersey's first lady encourages girls to pursue STEM careers
NJTV

At the chemistry lab building at Princeton University, New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy was talking about this year's Young Women Conference. It's an event to encourages more girls to go into science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, fields. It's something the first lady says is very important to her.  "I think it's a problem across the state in terms of getting people into STEM overall, so I love the fact that they're doing this here," Murphy said.  Numbers from New Jersey show out of about 327,000 STEM jobs in the state, only 25 percent are filled by women. Professional Engineers Day 2018
nspe.org

Celebrate licensure and the profession with PEs around the world on August 1, 2018 for the third annual Professional Engineers Day!  On August 8, 1907, the first professional engineering license was issued to Charles Bellamy in Wyoming. Since that time, licensure has expanded and professional engineers across the U.S. have made the commitment to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. NSPE is celebrating licensed professional engineers with the third annual Professional Engineers Day  on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Join us as we raise awareness about what it means to be a PE, recognize licensed PEs, and show appreciation for the work they do each and every day.  READ MORE

Changing the Conversation on the Value of the PE
nspe.org

NSPE was saddened to learn of the pedestrian bridge collapse at Florida International University on March 16, 2018, and the tragic loss of life. NSPE immediately offered its deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and Miami's citizens. We are closely monitoring the investigation into the collapse. By determining the root cause, PEs can help prevent crises like this from occurring again.  Just four days later, there was another fatality-this time, a pedestrian in Arizona was struck and killed in the first fatal crash involving a fully autonomous vehicle. Again, NSPE publicly expressed its deepest condolences to the victim's family and all involved in this incident.   READ MORE

NSPE Defeats Major Threat to PE License in Louisiana
nspe.org

In a victory for professional engineers, a Louisiana bill (H.B. 748) was stripped of a provision that would prohibit the use of most professional certifications or accreditations within the state and a provision that presumes that market competition is sufficient to protect consumers.  The final version of the Occupational Licensing Review Act directs the governor to review on an annual basis not less than 20% of the agencies engaged in regulatory and licensing activities over the rules, regulations, and procedures employed by the agency. Within five years, the governor would have reviewed all agencies.   READ MORE
