No doubt you’ve learned that the entry sets the tone for the home. Here we have a complete modernization of the English Country House with an entry hall that is contemporary without completely abandoning all old world tradition and elegance. This design style is Modern Traditional.

The following are some tips and ideas from this project on the essential elements for a modern traditional entry hall.

The Inspiration: Modern Traditional Architecture

I’m sure we’ll agree that the British are rooted in tradition as are the clients and builders of this special home built on the hills above the Salish Sea. The pastoral setting, gave forth a plan for a simple cottage style with welcoming classic features such as the entrance portico. There is no heavy opulence of expression in decorative arts in this home but a healthy balance of clean structure and lines. You’ll fine the old and new, the spirit, subtle and calm throughout.

The owner decided to use this octopus bowl on her Duncan Phyfe table as a counterpoint to the clean straight lines of the entry. There is another counterpoint with a contempary box light above, purely modern and contrasting with the idea of traditional paneling. A blend of tradition and modern helps to make a statement with very few objects.

To keep with the spirit of the home, I designed a very simple joinery. I worked out with sketches and models with the joiner, client and builder to get the perfect scale and cut back on the decoration for a simple clean modern traditional style.

The Powder Room

The entry’s guest powder room is the place where you can showcase intense or bold
decoration or even a touch of whimsy.
To express the Modern Traditionalist, we contrasted a very modern vessel sink and faucets with a traditional French Rococo vanity. The subtle arch is repeated again in the kitchen and it’s pretty wallpaper contrasts with the strong straight clean lines of the home.
