Dancing with Nature

April 2018 Issue 4 Vol 8
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

My heart is at peace with the world when I am in the woods. The spirit of the forest wraps me in its sounds, smells and sights ... and solitude ~ I am with calm.   One of the major reasons for moving here was the abundant opportunity to hike. When I pull my boots on, I know my feet are about to take me to my happy place.

We have been blessed with the fortunate opportunity to hike bi-annually to Mt. LeConte Lodge in the GSMNP with a group of forty/sixty led by Steve Woody, driving force of Friends of the Smokies for many years. Recently, I had the delight of sharing this experience with one of my granddaughters. We had our 7-year-old Harper alongside 80-year-old "Woody", hopping a generation.

I cannot say which one I admired more on this five+ mile INTENSE hike UP carrying backpacks filled enough for an overnight stay. Our daughter was with us; three generations with the same determination. This was a "kid encouraged" trip as Friends of the Smokies has made the trail, Alum Cave, more manageable and "Woody", our fearless leader on his 63rd trek, recognizes the need to encourage families to make memories by sharing the path in these amazing forests that surround us. It was an incredible opportunity that I am grateful for.

Speaking of generation hopping, May's Art After Dark will feature Jeffrey Stoner and Becky Smith ~ two different generations from two different backgrounds, but both amazing in their fields, coming together for one delightful evening of art. Read more below. We hope that you can join us for an evening of "Beauty and the Beasts".

As the hike was in its home stretch, and we were bringing up the rear, this youngest and oldest walked hand in hand with great respect for each other's accomplishment, sharing the path and a memory that all will cherish forever. I encourage you to take the time to share a bit of you with the new generation.

All the best ~
              Carrie

PS: Here is my shout out to you to support Friends of the Smokies as they are instrumental in maintaining the trails and facilities in our most amazing Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Spotlight Charlie Patricolo
Doll Maker
C harlie Patricolo lives and works in Murphy in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Charlie has been making dolls for over thirty years. An early love of fabric and sewing skills learned at home provided the basics. Even as a teen she was hooked on cloth dolls.

Charlie does not take credit for the final element in the creation of her dolls - Faerie Dust. As the doll forms there is something magic that happens - sometimes early - other times just at the point of completion. At that moment a bit of Faerie Dust enters and takes ownership of that figure. No human intervention can alter its course after that!

Charlie's dolls sit, kneel, pose, and smile adorned by the rainbow of splendidly tousled hair. Recently Charlie has begun to indulge her love of vintage fabrics, dressing her dolls in old-fashioned demure dresses crafted from old linens and handkerchiefs. These dolls join her exuberantly modern Mother Nature dolls and her tulle swathed faeries who like her reach for the stars.

In the near future Charlie will introduce a "Four Seasons Collection", truly a doll collector's delight.
