RTMC Newsletter - January 2018
National Rebuilding Day
Registration is now open for 2018 National Rebuilding Day! Rebuilding Together's flagship event, NRD, will take place in the weeks leading up to the culmination event on April 28, 2018. In this one amazing weekend, we make the biggest impact of the entire year in our community! Sponsors are needed to underwrite the cost of materials and enlist volunteers. We invite all businesses, faith-based organizations, and leadership groups to join us for this event where together we will uplift our local neighborhoods and create sustainable housing solutions for our county's most vulnerable residents.

RTMC is able to accommodate groups of all different skill sets! If you are willing to get dirty and make a difference in the community, then we invite you to join the program and sign up today. If you have any questions regarding the application process or the event itself, please contact James Itell at 301-947-9400 x105 or at  [email protected]

Why I Give - A Volunteer Story
As we enter the new year, many of us set goals to become a better version of ourselves. For some, this may mean exercising more often, for others it may mean setting financial goals, but for us here at RTMC, we strive to have a greater impact on the low-income families of Montgomery County.

Achieving our goal is not possible without our many supporters. Today, we want to highlight a special friend of RTMC, Jerry Liu, who has supported the organization as a donor, volunteer, contractor, and board member for over the past 20 years.

" "Why do I give to RTMC?" is actually the wrong question. I am one of many county residents who feel compelled to serve our community. Perhaps the better question would be, "What do we get out of serving our community?" because there is no doubt we get more than we give. First and foremost is the privilege of contributing to the well-being of a neighbor in need. No one plans to become disabled or unable to keep up with
home repair and maintenance. No one plans for their home to become a course of obstacles to daily routine, to leak when it rains, to become cold and drafty, or to deteriorate and become hazardous. When we aid our neighbor, we enrich our community (figuratively and even literally, by reducing the load on the social services) and ourselves. We meet caring and giving neighbors, and we share a little in the lives of the homeowners and their families whom we serve.

About 20 years ago, my friends from my sponsor group, Sandy Spring Bank, and I met an elderly and ailing physician who had spent her life and skills serving people in medically under-served countries overseas. She did not accumulate wealth for herself, but accumulated something of greater value- the lives and health of those people whose letters and cards continued to come in years after failing health bound her to her home. She lived simply in a 100 year old house in the woods of Lake Needwood. Dr. Lalla, as her friends and fans called her, knew her time was limited, and had deeded her house to the county park system.  She dreamed that her home in the woods could be provided as a retreat for artists or writers when she was gone. There were interior repairs, and the exterior needed repair and paint. In that particularly rainy year, we were rained out 3 times, and finally finished on a sunny day in September. When I took her by the arm and walked her around the house to see the fresh paint and repairs, she said "Oh, Jerry, I love my house." I must have looked into the sun, because my eyes suddenly teared up. Such a simple thing as painting the house brought this kind and giving woman such joy, and to me a memory that I will never lose. In 25 years, my volunteer friends and I have had great experiences, okay experiences, and a number of funny episodes, but our time with Dr. Lalla shines bright as that September afternoon sun."

Catch Us Around Town: RTMC's Upcoming Event!
SHE BUILDS
In partnership with ABC Women Building Washington, RTMC is hosting a She Builds event on March 9, 2018. This sister to sister event will support low-income female homeowners by creating safer and healthier homes, and give female builders a meaningful, hands-on opportunity for service.

Approximately 80 volunteers have enthusiastically registered and are currently seeking financial support for their service. To support this cause financially, or to learn more about the event,  please visit our website by clicking here.
2018 - Success, Growth & Change
It is with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I announce that, effective mid-March, I will be stepping down as Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Montgomery County. After much consideration, I've decided to advance my family's real estate business and continue my community investment by serving on nonprofit boards in both Washington, DC and Montgomery County.

During my 4 ½ year tenure at Rebuilding Together Montgomery County, we've enjoyed many accomplishments. Together, we've strengthened the Safe and Healthy home approach for our clients countywide and increased the visibility of the organization's services as recognized by multiple awards. We've also built a stronger IT infrastructure, streamlined operations, enhanced reporting processes, improved fund development activities and mobilized a highly competent staff to carry out RTMC's crucial work.  While I am proud to have played a role in these achievements, it has truly been a team effort with amazing team members, a passionate Board of Directors, and a community of supporters, friends and partners who believe in our mission and vision for our future.

Thank you for your support and partnership.  As I transition, I encourage you to remain actively involved with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County. Know that your support makes a significant difference in helping to address a critical affordable housing gap in our community - preserving the American dream for hundreds each year.

Rest assured that over the next few months, I will work closely with the Board of Directors, the staff, and our transition team at Raffa, a local leader in executive search and placement, to ensure a successful "passing of the baton" to our new leader. Should you have any recommendations of a potential candidate, feel free to reach out to us, or Lauren Weinstein at Raffa: [email protected].  Should you have any questions about the transition, feel free to reach out to me personally.

I will also forever remain a friend and champion of RTMC and our mission!

Sincerely,

Christina Betancourt Johnson "

RTH is there for the long haul, and is engaged in a multi-tiered approach to serve in both relief and recovery efforts. They are in need of assistance in repairing the exteriors of homes, installing insulation and sheet rock, repairing kitchens and bathrooms, installing flooring, and a number of other projects. Montgomery County FY18 Savings Plan
On January 2, County Executive Ike Leggett transmitted his proposed FY18 Savings Plan to the County Council. You can see the plan and read about some of the proposed cuts here.

RTMC participated in Nonprofit Montgomery's education session on the FY18 Savings Plan and believe that there will be a variety of actions that will be implemented to close the gap between now and the end of the fiscal year, including but limited to program reductions. To say the least, this will be a difficult budget year for our County and the many nonprofits that deliver essential services to County residents. Please be diligent as you learn and advocate on behalf of our sector and remember that the County budget is a reflection of your tax dollars at work - your voice and vote matters!
