Dear T-bird Parents & Families,
Spring semester can be a great opportunity for a fresh start for many students. Students can take a look at the things that were difficult and the things that worked well for fall and use both to create a more successful semester.
Collegiate Parent offers some
great tips
for helping your student create a fresh start, and offers the following conversation ideas for parents:
- Reinforce the opportunities that a fresh start brings: new classes, new professors, perhaps new friends, and new activities. Encourage your student to take advantage of a new perspective.
- Remind your student of how much they know now that they didn’t in the fall — both about college life and about themselves. Help them find areas of strength and build upon confidence gained.
- Ask about your student’s goals for this semester. What do they hope the next four months will bring? What will be required to accomplish those goals? Putting goals into words makes them more tangible. Thinking about what will be required to reach those goals will provide your student with a plan of action.
- List specific changes for the new semester. Whether or not fall semester was a good one, some changes can enhance the new term. Make sure that goals are attached to action plans. Will your student try out some new activities - or drop one or two? Will they spend more time studying, or sleeping? What’s the plan to make that happen?
Please feel free to contact me any time your student has a need and you aren't sure where to send them for support. There are so many resources available, let's help your student use them. I look forward to a new semester learning together.

- The Nest is also home to the ACES program and the First Year Experience (FYE) Office.
- The FYE office hosts meet-up events 30 minutes before large campus activities, so students can meet new friends and attend activities together. Over 30 meet-ups are planned for spring semester
- Students and families can follow FYE at SUU on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter.
- If your student could use help getting connected and finding their place on campus, send them to the Nest.
