set up to answer any questions and

Dear Chamber Orchestra Musicians and Families,
I hope that you are all doing well.
I am writing to you with a reminder that we will have our special required Chamber Orchestra rehearsal for our upcoming May 5 Encore Concert and event on Thursday, May 3 in Balboa Park from 6pm to 8pm.
Our rehearsal on May 3 will begin with full orchestra for all musicians at 6pm to approximately 7:30pm, and will then be strings only with our special guest soloist and Alumni violist Andrea Fortier, beginning at approximately 7:30pm until 8pm.
Please make sure to arrive early to the rehearsal to allow time for traffic and to be seated and warmed up.

Dear current Sinfonia and Wind Symphony 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade Parents and Musicians,
I hope that you are doing well and having a wonderful Spring Season.
I am writing to introduce myself and to let you know about a special informal get together and Q and A meeting regarding the Ovation ensembles and auditions for the 2018-19 Season.
The Ovation ensembles, as the most advanced level of ensembles in the SDYS programs, provide students and families with the study of exciting professional level repertoire, concert performances, friendships, leadership and community opportunities and, our most advanced musical training.
This
Saturday, April 28
at the conclusion of the Sinfonia rehearsal, from 1pm to 1:30pm I will be hosting an informal get together and meeting for all interested students and parents in
room 205
in Balboa Park to share details about the Ovation ensembles and to have an informal Q and A session for students and parents to learn about audition practice tips, and much more about the many exciting opportunities for Students and Families in our Ovation ensembles at SDYS. This year all Sinfonia and Wind Symphony musicians who are eligible by grade level, which is to be in 9th grade or higher for the 2018-19 season, will have the opportunity to be considered for placement into the Ovation ensembles when they audition at our upcoming June auditions.
I will be available to meet you and to answer any questions about the Ovation ensembles and Ovation auditions at the workshop on April 28th and to share details with you about our Ovation ensembles and programs.
I hope to see you all there at

Adjusted Rehearsal Schedule

, SDYS will host our annual
Encore!
fundraising event here in Casa del Prado. The event will take place from 5 pm to 9 pm. Rehearsal times will be adjusted slightly for this day.
Below is the adjusted rehearsal schedule. Please note all students must be present 15 minutes before rehearsal begins to be ready and warmed up .

- Wind Symphony: 8:30 am - 10:20 am
- Sinfonia: 10:45 am - 12:35 pm
- Concert Orchestra: 12:40pm - 2:30 pm
- Symphony Orchestra: 2:40 pm - 6:20 pm
- Chamber Orchestra: 2:40 pm - 9:00 pm (light dinner will be served)

- Wind Orchestra: no Wind Orchestra rehearsal
- Concert Winds:
- 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm - regular rehearsal

Online registration for the 2018-19 season is officially open! Current students are able to register through the
Parent Portal

Auditions will take place May 30-June 16.
All currently enrolled musicians--
including marching band students
--must audition in June. The deadline to register is Monday, May 21 at 12 NOON. Audition assignments will be emailed out to families on Friday, May 25. If you are traveling in the summer, we recommend you plan your trip for after the audition.

SDYS' annual
Encore!
will take place on
Saturday, May 5 at Balboa Park
and we need your help! Volunteers can choose from a variety of activities with flexible schedules to support scholarship recipients at our biggest fundraiser of the year!

Baby and Me Guest Performer
Would you like to be a guest performer for young children? SDYS is seeking Conservatory musicians to be featured on a Friday morning "Baby and Me Music Class" in Balboa Park. Be a guest performer for 0-4 year olds and their caregivers, playing a piece of music of your choice as well as a classic kid favorite: Itsy Bitsy Spider? Wheels on the Bus? Guest performers needed from
10:45am--12:15pm on these dates:
- April 27
- May 4, 11, 18, 25
This opportunity is particularly great for students who are home-schooled and can be counted for community service hours.

We are accepting wind and string instruments that will all be going to conservatory and community
students that need them. You can drop them off Monday - Friday during regular business hours, or
on the weekends during rehearsals.

has been accepted to be part of the Middle School Honor Band. Kudos, Howard!
Connor Hodgson (Debut Strings, Violin
) has been accepted to be a part of the Elementary School Honor Band. Kudos, Connor!
Ilana Hirschfeld (Ovation Program, Associate Concertmistress)
is currently a senior at UC High School, and she is proud to represent her school as the concert master of the SD Unified Honor Orchestra - an honor she has had for the past six years. Kudos, Ilana!
Henry Helmuth (Ovation Program, Assistant Principal, Cello)
is a senior at UC High School and has held the position as principal cellist for the past four years. He has once again been accepted to participate in the San Diego Unified Honor program as principal cellist. Kudos, Henry!
Emily Pilkington (Ovation Program, Principal Violist)
is a junior at UC High School and has held the position of Principal violist since she was a freshman. She has been part of the SDUSD honor program since the 4th grade, and is honored once again to be Principal violist for the high school honor program. Kudos, Emily!

Art Amplifying Youth (AAY! 2018) is a gathering for youth by youth to provide a platform for creative expression around the issues of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Change, to provide peer-to-peer and professional learning and networking opportunities.
If you are between the ages of 14-24 who would be interested in attending or submitting your art for, please see the links below.
The youth leadership team has worked really hard and have done an amazing job planning youth-led workshops, keynote speakers, performances, an art show, and much more!! Let's make sure we help recruit as many students as possible to show our support and have a great turn out!
