Preparation for the Cantorial Search
As we prepare to search and interview candidates this coming summer and fall, we want to make sure that our Temple Israel members' thoughts and voices are integral to the process. 
There will be a number of opportunities to reflect and to speak together as a community.  The first opportunities are scheduled for the following dates:

Upcoming opportunities at Temple Israel, no registration required:
  • Sunday, January 13 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Focused on Religious School parents and members of Leadership Council
  • Friday, February 1 following Qabbalat Shabbat for an Oneg conversation
  • Saturday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. Shabbat morning following Torah study

Mazal Tov! Temple Israel Earns GreenFaith Energy Shield Certification
Temple Israel is the first Reform synagogue in New England to receive the GreenFaith Energy Shield Certification! The Energy Shield is a 1-month program designed for synagogues to take action to reduce their carbon footprint and help their congregants do the same at home. The GreenFaith EnergyShield reflects the values of stewardship that reach back to Genesis and remind us of the importance of partnering with God in the ongoing work of Creation. Shabbat Tzedek
Friday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m.
Join us for an inspirational Shabbat Tzedek, a Sabbath of Justice, to celebrate the values and life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year, we will welcome Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley as our 2019 Shabbat Tzedek speaker. Pressley is an advocate, policy-maker, activist, and survivor. In 2009, she won election to the Boston City Council, marking the first time a woman of color was elected to the Council in its 100-year history. On November 6, 2018, Pressley was elected to represent Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District in Congress; she is first woman of color to represent Massachusetts in Congress.  See who else is planning to come .

American Sign Language interpretation is available for this event through the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Please contact Nikk Modell-Wasserman for more information.

Childcare is available. Babysitting for 0-3 years old available in room 105 starting at 5:30 p.m., children's programming for 4 years old - 1st grade and 2nd grade and up during the service. Please contact Brigid Goggin for more information. All families are welcome to join us before the service, at 5:00 p.m. for a pizza pre-neg.

Whether you have a bank account or you have several investments across asset classes, you can align your money with your values. Please join TIkkun Central's Racial & Economic Justice Initiative third session in a seven-part series on impact investing. In this session, we will welcome a panel of expert investment advisors who will help you identify investment options to invest your capital for impact. This session will provide us with:
  • An overview of various impact investments
  • Access to experienced professionals' perspectives on aligning your investing with your values
  • Opportunities to meet other Temple members and explore impact investing opportunities together

The Ancient Law: A Silent Movie Accompanied by Live Music by Alicia Svigals & Donald Sosin

Baruch, a rabbi's son, yearns to become an actor so, against his father's wishes, leaves his shtetl for the Vienna stage. But success cannot quell Baruch's guilt and longing for home. A precursor to The Jazz Singer, The Ancient Law is one of the first films to have addressed the subject of assimilation and features visually stunning depictions of shtetl life. This gem of German-Jewish cinema will be shown with live musical accompaniment by the extraordinary violinist Alicia Svigals and pianist Donald Sosin (who accompanied The Yellow Ticket in Boston in 2013). This program is a partnership with Jewish Arts Collaborative and the Boston Jewish Film Festival. Buy tickets here.
From Buffalo to Jerusalem: A History of American Zionism and Our Complex Love Affair with the Jewish Homeland

As the American Jewish/Israeli relationship becomes increasingly complex, it's crucial we step back and examine our history. Join us to explore the events and personalities which shaped American Judaism's attitudes towards Israel. We will start by examining attempts to create a kibbutz in Buffalo, New York back in 1825 and move through Louis Brandeis' transformation of American Zionism and onward until we arrive at the most recent debates of divestment.
