If the word "Kansas" conjures up images of tallgrass prairies and herds of bison, fair enough. My home state certainly provides the stereotypical scenery that inspired its state song, Home on the Range. But it also has plenty of other experiences for the art, foodie, history, sports, and nightlife loving traveler. Here's what you should do, see, and eat when you visit Kansas.

Let's be honest: No matter where you go in Kansas, you're basically guaranteed some sort of lovely view; however, these 10 Kansas towns have the crème de la crème of breathtaking views!

Wearing a colorful Christmas-themed sweater, Connie Brunner seems comfortable among the vintage furniture and wares inside Cedar Street Market Antiques in downtown Abilene, Kansas. The store is an extension of her interior design business, Third and Vine. She uses pieces from the store to help arrange rooms, such as the work she did for the Engle House Bed and Breakfast.

Abilene Flag Project

In 2019 we will commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the grand re-opening of the renovated Eisenhower Presidential Museum, as well as the 150th anniversary of the City of Abilene's incorporation. Visitors to Abilene frequently comment on the beautiful American flags lining Buckeye and 3rd Street. The American flags are one of the many wonderful things that make our community standout.

To continue this tradition, the City of Abilene's Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking sponsors for the American flags, which are placed on poles from I-70 along Buckeye to the south city limits and from Buckeye west on 3rd Street. The flags are flown from the Eisenhower Marathon weekend through Veterans Day. Because they are displayed for seven months, the flags and poles are more prone to wear and tear. The City of Abilene's Public Works Department replaces them as needed.

Our goal this year is to purchase 200 flags for the 2019 season. The cost of each flag remains the same at $25, which includes the pole.

Volunteers from the American Legion and VFW attach the flags to the flagpoles. The Public Works Department, Eagle Communications, Abilene Rental, and Linder Electric install the flags on the light poles.

We rely on the community to provide funding for this project and hope you will consider purchasing one or more flags this year. Please complete the form below and return it to the Abilene CVB by January 8, 2019.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Abilene - Cattle Days to President Ike

The All-American City of 1960

The slogan "Biggest Little City" in the midwest is a most appropriate one for modern Abilene, which strikes strangers as being a considerably larger city than the 7,200 population counted by the assessors. Its tree-lined streets, fine homes, skyline, consolidated business district without the old fashioned town square, and many unusual attraction reflect the metropolitan atmosphere....

Following World War II much needed to be done. And the citizens, led mostly by younger men but with full support of the elders, met every challenge with spectacular results and developed a long-range program, which by 1961 had been virtually completed without a single setback or failure. Meanwhile, Abilene continued to move ahead in many fields.

Every progressive bond issue was approved to carry out this program involving hundreds of citizens directly and thousands more indirectly. The only local bond issue vote down in the two decades was for a downtown parking lot, in which personalities play a more important part than the issue itself. The city gained a statewide reputations for getting things done. It was cited in the Congressional Record and by both the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas Industrial Development Commission.

Commenting on the All-American Cities award given by the National Municipal League, the Kansas Chamber of Commerce said about Abilene's being ranked among the finalists (the only Kansas city so honored): "It is a well deserved recognition of the 'Abilene Spirit' we have come to expect from the progressive and aggressive citizens of Abilene." The Kansas Industrial Development Commission added this: "The record that Abilene has made during recent years is an outstanding one. Your achievements are well known and recognized by all of us - and even have been cited as examples to others." Abilene was cited again in the Congressional Record for the All-American award and received a commendation from former President Eisenhower.
