Hello, 2019! This is our first Footnotes newsletter of the new year, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than by announcing four free events! The first is something special.

Becka and I have been traveling around the state with presentations on the craft of writing and the business of publishing. On Saturday, January 19, we're bringing this program to Austin!

Don't miss this free presentation on the agent search and craft of writing! Plus, meet local writers and learn about programs that can support your writing this year

Are you starting or restarting a writing project?

This month, we're hosting three free panel discussions with authors who will offer strategies for kicking off a new or renewed project. Look for us in Dallas, Houston, and Austin!
IN-PERSON CLASS
Whose Story Is It? Playing with Point of View
with Stephanie Noll

Saturday, January 19, 2019
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
St. Edward's University, Austin, TX

Choosing a point of view shapes how you-and your reader-experience any narrative. In this class, participants will read and discuss excerpts of published works that utilize all the points of view available to writers-even 2nd person. The instructor will consider how point of view impacts the narrative experience of these pieces, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various points of view, and complete writing exercises that will give writers the opportunity to "try on" all different perspectives as they determine which one is the best fit for their work.

Online registration closes Thursday, January 17, at midnight. Walk-ins will be accepted as space allows.
ONLINE CLASS
Submitting 101: Everything You Want to Know about Submitting to Journals and Magazines But Were Afraid to Ask
with James Tate Hill

Thursday, January 24, 2019
6:30 to 9:30 p.m. CST

Get in-depth insights into the many aspects of submitting one's work for publication. This class will examine the basics of where and how to submit short stories and essays, cover letters, keeping track of submissions, dos and don'ts, helpful tips, and how long it will take to receive a response. Learn what editors look for in submissions, which venues might be a good fit for your work, when to contact and how to interact with editors, whether or not to pay submission fees, and how to pitch an essay to a magazine that doesn't accept general submissions. In short, this course will take a thorough look at every step in the sometimes overwhelming process of sending your work into the world.
