The Arts are an important part of BFA's curriculum. Our visual and performance art programs encourage creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving and communication. In addition, they compliment our focus on science, technology, engineering and math--creating well-rounded students.
Earlier today, we formally recognized BFA students who have demonstrated dedication to the theatre arts program at BFA by inducting them into BFA's new Junior Thespian troupe.
The International Thespian Society aims for the advancement of excellence in educational theatre and the continuing enrichment of theatre arts and their appreciation worldwide. BFA petitioned the International Thespian Society for the privilege of chartering this Junior Thespian troupe, and after determining that we met the standards required by their Board, our charter was granted.
Congratulations to the students who earned membership into our troupe as a result of their work in BFA's theatre arts that meets the International Thespian Society's guidelines. These students earned points for hours spent in rehearsal and performance, working on production crews and working in the 'box office.' In the future, they'll also earn points for doing committee work and helping with Junior Thespian projects.

BFA'S FINANCE COMMITTEE LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
The Finance Committee is
looking for volunteers with a background in finance or accounting. Volunteers will review school financials and budgets, recommend and manage the school's auditor, and make other financial policy recommendations to the board. Attending monthly meetings and working on special projects, members can expect to volunteer 1-3 hours a month. With two long-time members wishing to open the door for newer family involvement, this is a
great opportunity to fill a meaningful role on this important BFA committee.

TEACHER AND STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK, MAY 7-11
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week will be here before we know it.
Everyone can participate in making the week special for our favorite BFA people. If you'd like to know more, click

ART CLUB, PAINTING AND DRAWING CLASSES DONE FOR SCHOOL YEAR
This was the LAST WEEK for Mrs. Hinkle's after school Art Club and Painting and Drawing classes. There will be no classes for the remainder of this school year.

ALL library books will need to be returned by Friday, May 11. Please remind your child to bring their books on/by May 11. Fines will be assessed beginning Wednesday, May 16, if books are not turned in. The library will be closed for borrowing the last two weeks of school. Thank you!

EXTRA Dress of Choice Day: TOMORROW, Friday, April 27
Who doesn't love an EXTRA Dress of Choice Day?!
All students (with the exception of those going on field trips) can participate in an EXTRA Dress of Choice Day TOMORROW, April 27. To participate, send your child with a dollar ($1) tomorrow (please have exact change) to turn into his/her homeroom teacher, and s/he can join in the fun!
Frozen Treat Sale: Friday, May 4, Second Recess
DI team members and parents will be at school on Friday, May 4, selling Otter Pops for a dollar ($1) each
during second recess to all grades (and during middle school recess). If your child would like to participate, please make sure they hold onto their frozen treat money until second recess for purchase. Single bills are greatly appreciated! (Otter Pops are gluten free and have no artificial colors or flavors.)
Ben Franklin Bolting Fundraiser: Now through Friday, May 18
Bring the lightning (and the thunder) to BFA lawns via this Ben Franklin Bolting Fundraiser! "Bolt" a fellow BFA family for a tax-deductible donation of $25 to the BFA PTO and cover the lawn of BFA families with a dozen (12) Ben Franklin Lightning Bolts!
Place an order on the
BFA Store
and enter the address of the family you want to bolt. When you enter the bolted family's address, you can remain anonymous or let 'em know who bolted them. The DI teams will place the BFA "bolts" in the family's yard for which you paid. Then the family who is "bolted" can choose to have the "bolts" moved to another lawn for $25 by placing an order on the
BFA Store
to keep the fun going. The DI teams will remove the "bolts" the following evening regardless of giving a donation. Let's be Frank(lin) about it--bolting is fun!
Plus, the grade with the highest percentage of participants in bolting will win a Crazy Hat Day later in May. Congratulations to FOURTH GRADE, who continues to hold onto their lead from last week!

You will need the address of the family you'd like to "bolt." Helpful hint: Use the Directory On Tap app to look up an address to "bolt." DI teams can only deliver to families currently attending BFA. They cannot deliver to a public space or a townhouse, condo or apartment complex. Please email Missy Washeck with any questions.
At the end of May, BFA's three DI teams will travel to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to compete among 1,500 teams (approximately 8,000 participants) from 20 different countries. The cost to attend Global Finals is about $1,500 per student. DI is a creative problem-solving program that integrates STEAM principles and teaches 21st century skills, including leadership, teamwork, positive thinking and project management.

PTO ELECTIONS OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT TOMORROW
The PTO is an integral part of the BFA community. The mission of the PTO is to seek resources to strengthen, enhance, and encourage the educational and social experience at Ben Franklin Academy. Each year, the parent community is asked to vote for open executive officer and committee chair positions. To view the candidate bios, please go to the

Each family unit is permitted to cast one vote per position, and election results will be announced at the PTO meeting on Thursday, May 17.

BFA HAS A NEW SPIRIT ROCK!
Have you seen the new Spirit Rock next to the carpool lanes? Starting in August, you'll have the opportunity to rent the rock! Paint it to wish your child a happy birthday, encourage a team, or thank a staff member. The PTO looks forward to seeing your creativity this fall!

PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Douglas County Libraries will be doing their summer reading program again this year! The program runs
June 2-31 and registration starts May 1. Look for a flyer in your child's Thursday folder or visit their

SUMMER CAMP SCHEDULES AVAILABLE NOW
Ben Franklin Academy is happy to announce that we will offer an exciting Summer Camp program again this year.
In fact, the 2018 summer camp calendars are finished and ready for parents to view (see below for details).
Do you need full-time daycare for the summer? Or perhaps you want to schedule something fun for your kids once a week while you run errands. Maybe your kids would like to connect with other Ben Franklin Academy kids and enjoy fun, summer social time? Whatever your situation, our Summer Camp is sure to keep your kids safe and entertained. And, the best part is--the program is staffed by people you know and trust!

Daily Tuition: The cost of the camp is $35/day/child for non-field trip days and $50/day/child for field trip days.

Curious about Chemistry? Come and discover some of the basic principles of chemistry through laboratory exercises and experimentation. Grow your own edible crystals, make ice cream with carbon dioxide, and explore how the substances of the world interact with each other.

How?
Simply
order a dedicated BFA King Soopers and/or Safeway gift card from the BFA Store, and use it to buy your groceries. Then, re-load your King Soopers or Safeway gift card at Customer Service or at the register before you scan your first item.
Online shoppers can use grocery cards too! Shoppers using Safeway's online service can make purchases with their Safeway grocery card, while King Soopers online shoppers can pay using their grocery card when they pick up their order.
Ordering your King Soopers and Safeway cards is easy!
Just go to the
BFA Store, click on 'Grocery Cards' and order yours today. The cards are pre-loaded with $5. When ordering, be sure to include your FIRST/LAST NAME and FULL MAILING ADDRESS. Your King Soopers/ Safeway card(s) will be mailed directly to the address provided. Once the order is received, please allow five business days for processing.

If it's been a while since you used your card, and it's been left with a zero balance, your card will expire! Please
order a new card through the store, as the zero balance card will no longer give rebates back to BFA.

EIGHTH GRADE WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIP
Eighth Grade students who elected to attend the Washington, D.C. trip will leave for our nation's capital on Sunday, April 29. Students will visit many historic and important national sites in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. We hope you have a great time!

COMMUNITY EVENTS COMMITTEE (CEC) MEETING
The CEC is meeting from 6 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in the Dana Library. Parents are welcome to attend the meeting and learn more about this committee's activities.

Wednesday, May 2, is a Formal Uniform Day. Students should wear their navy polo with the BFA logo and tan pants, shorts, skirt or a skort.

BFA's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Committee is meeting from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, in the Sanders Science Lab. All are welcome to attend!

Friday, May 4, is a BFA Spirit Day. Students may wear their Spirit Wear shirts, a field day T-shirt from a prior year, or a Fun Run t-shirt.
