Winter 2017

top-final
From our Cedarwood family to yours, we are very grateful to have clients like you in our lives.  Sincere wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a New Year filled with joy, health and happiness!
Winter Time = Design Time
Creating a functional space out of the most difficult area, large or small is one of our specialties.  Do you have a problem area in your landscape that needs a 'little something'?  An outdated landscape that's beyond its prime or a blank slate void of plant material?  Deer issues?  Drainage issues?  The 2018 planning and planting schedules are filling up.  If you have some spring time 'sprucing' up in mind, please reach out to us so we can work together and get your project on the schedule.
Yikes - its cold outside!  Here is a bit of winter reading while you stay warm and toasty inside.

An educated customer is our best customer!  And we have the BEST customers!  Here is a (very) brief education of the dormancy process: Photosynthesis slows, respiration slows and growth stops, minimizing metabolic activity to help a plant conserve energy.

Plant Dormancy 101 and Why is Winter Pruning Important:

What happens to plants in the winter? What is dormancy?

Spring through summer are active growing months where plants are in the photosynthetic process, changing carbon dioxide, water & inorganic salts (nitrogen, phosphorus & potassium) into carbohydrates. During the autumn months, plants move these sugars from the leaves down to the roots in preparation for winter nourishment. This process includes the removal of the green chlorophyll from the leaves. Chlorophyll is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesise carbohydrates.  Once removed, it leaves behind fabulous pigments of red, orange and yellow, unique to each plant.

Dormancy is survival. It's a defense against freezing temperatures which can cause water to expand in the outer layers of bark, causing cracks and splits. Sunlight minimizes during the winter and the ground freezes making hydration difficult to absorb.

What are the benefits of winter pruning?

Winter pruning promotes & invigorates plant regrowth in the spring. Wounds are less likely to be exposed to disease and insect infiltration during the colder months. It is also easier to visually see diseased & damaged limbs as well as the trees trunk structure when the foliage isn't present.  This lovely Acer palmatum var. dissectum is a living piece of art nurtured by our expert pruners.

Dormancy waits for warmer weather and environmental changes...waiting for renewal and a fresh start. Warmer, sunnier days are encouragement for the chance to come to life with full abundancy and vigor!

Brush Clearing Aids in the Reduction of Ticks

Now, more than ever, its important to protect yourself, your family and your pets from tick bites.  According to CDC (March 2017), 'Ticks can be infected with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Some of the most common tick-borne diseases in the United States include: Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, anaplasmosis, Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness, Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever, and tularemia'.  The Blacklegged Tick below may be the most popular tick in NJ.

Areas such as the woodland edge in the photo above attract & host tick populations, as they reside primarily in high brush areas. To decrease the risk of a tick borne disease, we highly recommend the removal of brush if it is in close proximity to your families play yard, entertainment area, or where your pets 'roam', to reduce the risk of  a tick bite.  Now is the perfect time to remediate a location of concern and reduce the 'invitation' for ticks to occupy your landscape beginning in the springtime.

Removal of this brush will also improve the appearance of these areas and a top dressing of woodchip mulch would create a attractive transition into a woodland area.  This maintenance will also assist in decreasing the re-establishment of weedy & invasive plant material.

We also offer tick control applications in addition to our fertilization & insecticide application programs.  Please contact us if you would like to be included.

Fountain Grass Pruning
Very often, fountain grasses are left intact for winter interest.  However, some clients prefer to have them cut to the ground for aesthetic reasons or as on this property, to highlight their spectacular art collection.  Whatever the reason may be, our Master Pruners are ready and willing to provide you with the finest pruning services on all types of grasses, shrubs & trees, that will further improve the health of your plant material as well as the beauty of your landscape.
