PASTOR KEN WILL VISIT
Pastor Ken Albright will meet with the congregation on Sunday, January 5, after each service.
Council has called a special congregational meeting to be held on Sunday, January 12, when members of our congregation can decide, via written ballot, whether or not to extend the call to Pastor Ken.
Pastor Ken has worked in ministry for 25 years in four congregations. His wife is Charlotte and they have two adult daughters who live in NC.
More detailed information about Pastor Ken has been mailed to members and friends of Good Shepherd.

NOISY OFFERING
Our next "noisy offering" will take place on
Sunday, January 5
, when the children will collect your pocket change in metal buckets (hence, the noise!) to help fund four of our youth attending the Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) Assembly in Greensboro from February 21 - 23. The youth who would like to attend are Yuri and Isa Emaus, Joe Smith, and Forrest McConnell.
Start rounding up your change! If your change jar happens to be low, bills and checks (made out to LCGS and indicating LYO Assembly) will also be gratefully accepted. Thank you!

FAIR TRADE SALE THIS SUNDAY
A fair trade sale will take place this Sunday,
January 5, during both coffee hours in the Fellowship Hall. A variety of chocolate, coffee, tea, nuts, and oil will be on sale. Every purchase helps small-scale farmers. Thank you!

WELCA EPIPHANY PARTY
The Women of the ELCA will enjoy an Epiphany party in the home of Barbara Meyer on
Tuesday, January 7, at 12:00 p.m. Barbara will provide the meat and drinks. Guests are asked to bring a side dish to share.
Sandra Ostermeier will be offering a devotional and there will be a collection of unwrapped men's clothing to be donated to Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee. All women and their spouses are welcome! Please contact Barbara Meyer ([email protected]) with any questions.

ATTENTION QUILTERS
Weekly quilting for Lutheran World Relief will begin again on
Tuesday, January 14, from 9:30 am. - noon. All are welcome; no sewing skills required, though are helpful.
Quilt tops made at home would be greatly appreciated. Speak to Barbara Hotaling for details (884-7308).
Cotton fabrics and sheets of dark colors or prints (not solid light colors) are always welcome as backing.

HVAC SERVICING
The last two days of 2019, MAC Heating and Air Conditioning serviced all seven of our heating and air conditioning units and associated air handlers.
Several recommendations were made. One was setting the thermostat to 60 degrees instead of 50 degrees when leaving the Education Wing. The thermostats have been marked with the new settings.
The settings for all of the other thermostats remain the same as in the past.

Christmas is a unique and special time all over the globe, and Senegal is no different. Although a majority Muslim country, there were still touches of holiday cheer to be found: billboards wishing a "Joyeux Noël" [Merry Christmas], a small nativity scene in the church, and Christmas advertisements on the television. However, it felt totally different being away from the complete holiday overload we have in the States. No Christmas music that started in November. No pressure to buy the biggest/best gift. No mall Santas to be seen. At first I missed these touches of American Christmas tradition. But after spending the holiday here, I came to appreciate the meaning of the Senegalese version of the holiday: family.

REFRESHMENTS FOR GETTING AHEAD CLASSES
Sharing House is offering another Getting Ahead series,
designed to help people imagine and create a more stable financial future for themselves and their children. The class will meet on Wednesdays, beginning on January 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Brevard Wesleyan Church, and will include about 12 people.
Sharing House needs help providing snacks and drinks for the class
(i.e.
breakfast or lunch foods such as casseroles, fruit, coffee cake, sandwich trays, cheese and crackers, soups and salads, chips and dip, brownies, cookies, etc.).
Sharing House will supply the paper goods and utensils.
Providing refreshments may not seem like a worthwhile thing to do, but it is a meaningful and tangible way to accompany others, and is always greatly appreciated by class members.
Consider providing snacks with a friend. If you'd like to help, please sign up on the bulletin board or contact Kimberly Dunbar (883-3680 or [email protected]). Deliver the snacks around 9:45 a.m. to Brevard Wesleyan Church on the scheduled day

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED IN TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY
The following article is from our local Department of Social Services' December newsletter.
As we all prepare for the start of a new year, take a moment to think about our children who were not able to celebrate the holidays around familiar places, friends, and family for the simple fact of availability of foster homes in our county. Transylvania County Department of Social Services averages 50 to 60 [children] in custody, and about 20 of those children are placed outside of the county. It is possible to bring those children back to their hometown with more foster homes in Transylvania County.

in the Transylvania County Election Center conference room to learn more about how you can make an impact on Transylvania County foster care. Special guest speakers include guardian ad litems, foster parents, and children who have aged out of foster care. There are many ways to support Transylvania's children. "The mountains are calling and I must go." Perhaps you've seen a shirt, mug, or other item printed with this quote from naturalist and preservationist John Muir. It's actually a shortened version of a sentence in a letter written to Muir's sister in 1873: "The mountains are calling & I must go & I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." For many of the church leaders from across the NC Synod, the mountains call each fall and we must go-specifically the mountains call us to Fall Convocation at Lutheridge from Monday to Wednesday sometime each fall.
