MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Hello and Happy New Year!

This has been a wonderful holiday season at the Home. Whether one prefers music, parties, prayers, presents, laughter or all of the above - you could find it here at 5425 Western Avenue NW!

I think I speak for the staff, residents, family members and friends when I say that the care, love and friendship that happen here is palpable. As I reflect on 2018, I feel so blessed to serve and work with such an extraordinary group of individuals. From all corners of the world, we have somehow ended up in this remarkable Home and have built an oasis of goodness, caring, respect and love for each other.

We have had many achievements and challenges over the past year. We have made new friends and lost others.  We also have had to stay positive in a world that may often seem divided and in turmoil. Somehow, I feel that we have created a safe haven where we can provide excellent care and receive the ultimate benefits of being appreciated, needed and respected for our contributions. This year marked our CEO, Ward Orem's, 40th year of dedicated service and in 2019 we will celebrate the Home's 80th Anniversary. Please join us on May 23rd for our anniversary festivities and to recognize the Home and our mission of service.

I wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful 2019.

Sue

  Dr. Vanessa Watson

GETTING TO KNOW REVEREND WATSON

On every Wednesday of the month, at 2 pm, you'll find many of the Home's residents have taken their seats in a circle facing Reverend Vanessa Watson who is standing behind the podium ready to begin the weekly service. She begins with a warm welcome, then fills the room with singing and enlightens the residents with her message of love, caring and the spirit of God. Reverend Watson brings joy, healing and laughter to the residents. She teaches Bible study at the Home and runs the Sunday service twice a month. Everyone is welcome to join regardless of religious affiliation in her weekly lessons and services at the Home.

Reverend Watson has been participating in the Home's church services and Bible lessons for nearly a year. When our former Chaplain, Reverend Annie Lanier, moved away from the area, Reverend Watson stepped in to help with the services. She is highly regarded by the staff and residents and, when it came time to fill the position, she was asked to apply and insisted on being the last one to be interviewed. She was clearly the favorite choice and was hired immediately. Reverend Watson began her career as a math teacher and eventually worked at IBM as an engineer. She went on to get her Master's degree in Project Management and worked at the White House. From there she felt a calling and attended Divinity School receiving a PhD in Counseling. When she's not spending time at the Home, she has her own healing ministry, "Empowerment for Success," where she teaches workshops. She has written two books on the power of healing and is working on a third.

Reverend Watson has become part of the Home's family; she often visits the residents in their rooms or, if needed, in the hospital. She conducts the Home's memorial services and has attended and volunteered for many of the Home's events. In her words, "I feel encouraged when I leave the Home. I feel like I'm lifted up and the load is light. It is a blessing for me to share the word of God with others. I love the Home and feel that the door was opened for me for a reason."
