Harvard forum examines safety of self-driving vehicles
New Jersey Herald

A Harvard University forum has examined how a recent death linked to self-driving technology is causing concern about safety.  "It's a little bit like the Wild West out there right now," said Deborah Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council.
Hersman was part of a Friday panel discussion at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health that explored whether the field is advancing too quickly as dozens of companies have begun experimenting on public streets in several U.S. states.  She joined other panelists in expressing optimism that eventually "machines will be better than us" at driving safely, while also worrying about the transition period before the technology is improved and society adapts to it.

Proposed Pipeline Extension Raises Ire
NJ Spotlight

Yet another proposed pipeline has some folks in the Garden State in an uproar.  The billion-dollar project proposed by Williams-Transco would carry fracked natural gas from the Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania to New York, entering the Raritan Bay about six miles from Old Bridge.  The project would require a new compressor station in Franklin Township and 35 miles of underground pipeline, most of it trenched deep beneath the Raritan Bay, supplying natural gas via New York to the northeast power grid.

Mississippi Litigation Has Significant Implications for Use of the Term 'Engineer'
nspe.org

Current litigation in the federal courts in Mississippi involving a company calling itself "Tire Engineers" provides NSPE an opportunity to actively assert and advocate in federal court its longstanding policy and position that the misuse of the term "engineer" by unqualified and unlicensed individuals or companies is misleading and deceptive and endangers the public health and safety. A positive outcome in this matter could influence other states' actions on the misuse of the term "engineer."

NSPE Successfully Champions Federal Legislation to Strengthen QBS Requirements
nspe.org

NSPE successfully advocated for the inclusion of an important provision in the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R. 4) to strengthen qualifications-based selection requirements for airports. NSPE and other engineering and construction associations sent a letter  to Bill Shuster (R-PA), chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, urging the incorporation of a bipartisan amendment offered by Rep. Bruce Westerman, P.E. (R-AR) and Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-IL). The Westerman-Lipinski amendment clarifies existing rules to ensure that airports follow a uniform QBS process for airport projects that use Airport Improvement Program funds.  READ MORE

NSPE Fights Legislation Threatening the PE License in Ohio
nspe.org

In coordination with the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, NSPE is fighting Ohio S.B. 255, which could undermine and potentially eliminate engineering licensure in the state. The legislation sets forth a new policy allowing the state to use the least restrictive regulation to protect consumers from present, significant, and substantiated harms that threaten public health and safety. The policy of employing the least restrictive regulation shall "presume that market competition and private remedies are sufficient to protect consumers." The legislation also establishes a sunset date for all occupational licensing boards and directs a sunset review for each board every five years. The bill places the burden on each board to defend its very existence in each review. READ MORE
