Class Reminders for Tomorrow - Tuesday, January 8

OLLI Winter Classes begin tomorrow Tuesday, January 8!  As you bundle up and travel to campus tomorrow morning, please keep in mind the following reminders:

Location
Most classes will be held in the Michel Student Center (915 N. Elmwood Ave., Peoria).  When you arrive, please stop by the registration table on the first floor to pick up your name badge, schedule, daily announcements, and other helpful materials.

Parking
With the students away for winter break, parking on campus is open to the public.  Feel free to park in any blue- or white-lined space near the Student Center, or in the Duryea Parking Deck (just south of the corner of St. James and Duryea).  Please use caution when walking on campus to avoid any icy areas.   The OLLI shuttles will continually patrol the campus parking lots and Duryea Parking Deck to offer a ride to anyone walking to the Student Center from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.   If you need parking lot assistance at any time, please call the OLLI cell phone at (309) 258-4142.

Lunch
Tuesday's complimentary buffet lunch will feature beef sirloin tips in a mushroom demi glace served over egg noodles, Greek salad with goat cheese, dried fruits, carrots, and citrus vinaigrette, a vegetable medley of roasted carrots and peppers, and soft dinner rolls.

For lunches during the remainder of the week, you are welcome to visit the Student Center Marketplace food court's Chik-Fil-A or deli, walk to one of the restaurants near campus, or bring a sack lunch.

Breaks
Each morning from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m., please start your day with our beverage service on the first floor of the Michel Student Center, just outside the Marketplace food court.  Our breaks with refreshments and snacks (with healthy options) will take place at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the same location.  During the  afternoon breaks, Catherine will lead a brief Yoga Session  on the second floor, so come on up and stretch with her!

Show Your Spirit!
Each day during classes, we will feature a different way for you to show your OLLI and school spirit!
  • Tuesday, 1/8 - I Love OLLI Day.  Why do you love OLLI?  Wear it on your sleeve, and see what others love, too!  Pick up a sticker at the registration table.

January 10 is Lottery Deadline for Trip to National Parks

This Thursday, January 10 is the deadline to enter the lottery for OLLI's Road Scholar trip to Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks.

Don't miss this opportunity to join OLLI as we discover historic national park lodges and magnificent displays of nature when we visit two jewels of the "Crown of the Continent" - Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta.  Travel dates are July 9 - 17, 2019.

OLLI Insider: Your Questions Answered

Dear OLLI Insider,
I signed up for OLLI classes, but I have a dentist appointment
Wednesday morning and may be running late. What should I do?

Signed,
Tardy Tom

Dear Tardy Tom,
The best thing about OLLI (besides the learning, food, friendship, and fun!) is the fact there are no tests or grades, and if you are running a little late, it's no big deal.  OLLI Classes are designed by OLLI members for OLLI members!

Sincerely,
OLLI Insider

CubeSail Solar Satellite to be Topic of Library Program

The Story of a Solar-Powered Satellite
Thursday, January 24
6:00 p.m.

The CubeSail Satellite has been in development for over a decade by students and faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This past December, it was finally launched from a site in New Zealand, as part of NASA's Educational Launch of Nanosatellites mission.

The satellite is about the size of a shoebox, and, once in space, its two halves split apart, unspooling between them an 820-foot-long solar sail - a ribbon of light -reflective material that allows the satellite to be propelled and maneuvered with energy from sunlight.

In his presentation, Dr. Michael F. Lembeck from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will discuss the project, talking about the development process, project goals, and results gathered so far.
