Legislative and Regulatory Updates
Assembly Announces New Committee Assignments
On January 3, California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon kicked off the 2018 legislative session by announcing new committee assignments. New appointments that could impact CASA members include:
  • Assemblymember Ash Kalra to the Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee
  • Assemblymember Bill Quirk to the Appropriations Committee
  • Assemblymember Ken Cooley to the Local Government Committee 
CASA’s Adam Link Shares Insights on Pending Toxicity Plan
The California State Water Board is considering a new regulatory policy for toxicity testing and compliance. In a recent interview with the California Water Environment Association, CASA Director of Government Affairs Adam Link weighs in on what the proposed regulation means, how it will impact wastewater labs and what water professionals can do to help.  
Changes to Recycled Water Policy Ahead
The State Water Board is seeking stakeholder input on proposed amendments to the Recycled Water Policy. On January 4, Water Board staff held a workshop to receive input on a number of potential amendments to the policy, many of which we support.

USEPA Seeks Information on Nutrient Removal
The USEPA recently published a notice in the Federal Register to seek comments on a proposed survey of all 17,000 wastewater treatment plants in the country. The voluntary “screener” survey is the first phase of an effort to evaluate the removal of nutrients at conventional secondary treatment facilities. 
WateReuse California Accepting Nominations for Annual Awards
Here’s your chance to recognize an outstanding recycled water project, outreach program, advocate, staff member or customer. WateReuse California is accepting nominations for its Annual Awards of Excellence. Nominations are due January 22. Winners to be announced at the 2018 Annual Conference in Monterey, March 25-27.

Rethink Methane Symposium Returns to Sacramento
Save the date for the 2018 Rethink Methane Symposium on February 6 and 7 in Sacramento. The Symposium brings together more than 350 policymakers, clean energy advocates and industry stakeholders from across the natural gas, bioenergy, solar, wind, hydrogen and fuel cell industries. The Symposium will examine how increasing the production and consumption of methane from organic and other renewable sources can help advance California’s climate goals.
