Rector's Ramblings

Edgar Allen Poe is well known for his macabre writing. His view of the world was uniquely dark, which has, in part, made him and his work fascinating to many over the one hundred seventy years since his death. Some have speculated about Poe's mental health, with most concluding that at the very least he suffered from depression and addiction. He was known from a young age to be quite serious and was skilled at identifying glasses as half empty. His own mental state and insecurities show up in his art again and again. One of his short stories came to mind this week, pulled from some deep recess of my childhood. The Sphinx. Not one of his more well-known pieces, The Sphinx was published in Arthur's Ladies Magazine in 1846, although the story is set in 1832. As I rediscovered the short story, I realized it was written for a time like this.

Worship

Worship This Week

Please join us on Sunday, at 9:15 am, for online Holy Eucharist, which will be available on the Christ Church Facebook page here, on our YouTube page here, or the Christ Church website here.
Celebrate Communion with Us Via Drive-Thru This Coming Sunday

We are now offering Drive-Thru Communion at Christ Church each Sunday, following the live stream of the Eucharist, until 12:00 NOON. There is no need to make a reservation. Cars will enter at the gate next to the mailbox on Frederica Road and drive down the path. Car windows should remain closed until directed to be lowered by the clergy. A member of the clergy will administer the Eucharist, after which parishioners will drive to the back gate, to exit onto Stevens Road.
In-Person Worship Update from Fr. Tom
With the recommendation of our Return to Worship Task Force and the consent of the Vestry, I am able to announce that we will be returning to in-person worship, outdoors, on Sunday, September 27. Beginning Tuesday, September 29, we will also start allowing small group gatherings indoors for limited periods of time.

Our first Sunday service will be at 8:00 am on Sunday, September 27 on the front lawn of Christ Church. We will be in touch with more details on how you can make a reservation (reservations are used to limit attendance) for one of fifty spaces available for that service. If we fill those fifty spaces, we will add another, earlier service. Future communications will outline what the service will require of attendees and how we will handle logistics. Online streaming and drive-through communion will also continue for the foreseeable future. Depending on how our outdoor worship works at Christ Church, we will look at add a service at St. Ignatius on Saturday evenings when it is prudent. We are starting small to ensure we can manage the logistics, volunteer training, and safety of coming together again.
Save the Date

Our Bishop, the Right Rev. Frank Logue is doing virtual visits to churches across the Diocese in order to officiate and record Sunday worship. He will be visiting Christ Church, Frederica on October 11, 2020.
All Saints Sunday
All Saints Day will be celebrated on Sunday, November 1, 2020 this year. This is a time of reflection and celebration, as we remember those who have died. We will be collecting their names for the All Saints Book of Remembrance.

If you would like to have the name of someone who has died since last year's All Saints Day services, or the name of a loved one who died prior to last year, read during the November 1 service, please email us at [email protected] with the name of the person you wish to honor. Please have the names in by Friday, October 23, 2020.
Prayer in the Church
Christ Church is now open for limited private prayer time by appointment. Each afternoon, Tuesday through Friday, there will be opportunities for individuals, couples, or families (sorry, no groups that don't live together at this time) to spend time in historic Christ Church for prayer.

To sign up you must call the office during regular business hours (912-638-8683), we will not take reservations via email.  You will be scheduled for your time only after speaking with Glenn Queener or another staff member who can confirm the reservation.  We ask that those who come in for prayers wear masks while in the church and wipe down the pew they sit in and anything they touch with provided cleaning materials as they leave.  A staff member will meet those with reservations to allow them access to the church, as our buildings are still closed to the public.  That staff member will screen for COVID symptoms including taking your temperature and recording names in our contact tracing log book.
Evening Prayer

If you enjoy hearing Evening Prayer read, please look for it at 5:00 pm on the Christ Church Facebook page here. The Rite I bulletin for evening prayer can be found here. The Rite II bulletin for evening prayer can be found here.

Devotionals
If you are a regular reader of the Forward Day by Day devotionals that are typically available in the Christ Church office and would like to continue to have access to them, please contact Glenn Queener at [email protected]. Glenn would like to have your name and street address, so he can send you copies of the booklets. You can also find the devotionals online here.
Join Our Online Contemplative Group
Parishioners from Christ Church Frederica have been meeting regularly online with a group of parishioners from Trinity Episcopal Church, in Asheville, North Carolina for an hour of prayer, reflection, and contemplation on Wednesday mornings. The time has recently been changed, to 11:00 am through 12:00 pm.

The group is going strong and would be happy to welcome any new participants. Email Randy Siegel at [email protected] if you'd like to join us!
Wednesday Men's Study Group Meeting Remotely
The Men's Study Group meets on Wednesdays, at 10:30 am. For the next few weeks, they will be exploring some curious observations they found in their readings of the Book of Acts. They have discovered that there are "blendings" of different styles from a variety of sources within several of the chapters in our New Testament. Example: A portion of Acts has some passages in which the pronoun "We" is used. So what do abrupt, but (sometimes) smoothly woven-in style changes like this suggest? What does it tell us about the early church?

How does the Book of Acts end? Does it appear to be complete, or does it look like an unfinished work in progress?

The men's group consensus has led to their decision to use Heaven and Hell: a History of the AfterLife by Bart D. Ehrman to uncover the processes by which, and how, the New Testament came to be. If you'd like to join the group for this Bible study or upcoming studies, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] or Fr. David Somerville at [email protected]  for the Zoom access information.
Women's Book Study
The Women's Book Study is meeting via ZOOM at 1:00 pm on Thursdays. They are reading White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, by Robin DiAngelo. Please contact Mother Ashton at [email protected] if you'd like more information about this book.

Adult Sunday Class Continues Break
The Adult Sunday Class, led by the Rev. Bob Brown continues to be on hiatus. Plans for the fall are evolving. For questions about the class and future studies, please contact Bob at [email protected].
 Children and Youth

Youth and Children's Activities

This past Sunday, Mtr. Katie talked about the Plagues of Egypt and the hard heart of Pharaoh that could not respond to God's word. Learn more about hearts that are soft and hearts that are hard in this week's lesson, available at the link below.

If you haven't had the opportunity to experience Kidurgy, click HERE, to see the message from the past Sunday. Whether you're a child or a child at heart, you'll enjoy this rewarding presentation of God's Holy Word.

If you need to get in touch with Mtr. Katie, please contact her at [email protected].
Virtual Sunday School for Children Starts on September 13!
Although we will not be gathering physically for Sunday School this fall, Mother Katie and our Sunday School teachers have worked out a plan for our children to meet virtually. Starting this Sunday, September 13, at 10:20 am, we will have a class for our PreK through Second Grade children, lead by Lynne and Ed Turner, and a class for our Third through Fifth Grade students, led by Mother Katie and Taylor Lenon. The curriculum for the fall will incorporate the Spark Bible, which illustrates Bible stories in a way that makes them exciting and relevant for younger children. If you'd like more details about the upcoming Sunday school classes and Zoom information, please contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected].
Youth - Some Day, We'll Be Together!

Mother Katie is working on proposals for outdoor youth group gatherings that will follow six foot social distancing guidelines and keep everybody safe. Doing the ropes course, playing mini golf, having a cemetery scavenger hunt, etc. are some of the suggestions. If you have an idea of what might be fun, let Mother Katie know! We are monitoring the COVID cases closely, and coming up with creative ways to gather and stay safe. Mother Katie is following the directives from our Church task force in these matters, and once given the thumbs up we will GATHER together AGAIN!

Mother Katie and your church is praying for our youth and families! Please feel free to reach out to Mother Katie anytime! [email protected].
Please Update Your Contact Information!
We would really like to update our information on each child at Christ Church and our parents. We want to make sure we are communicating as effectively as possible! So when you get a chance, please text, call or email Mother Katie and let her know your child's name, grade, cell phone # (if they have one), email address (if they have one) and double check that we have correct parent contact info, as well. Thank you! [email protected], 913-396-2922

Help Burroughs Molette Elementary School Whenever You Shop at Harris Teeter
You can help Burroughs Molette Elementary School every time you shop at Harris Teeter. Simply tell your cashier (during check-out) that you want Burroughs Molette's account number (6700) linked to your Harris Teeter VIC card. Once the account number is linked, every time you shop during the program, 2% of your Harris Teeter brand purchases will be contributed by Harris Teeter to the school. It's that easy!
Hurricane Laura - Help Is Needed
Hurricane Laura slammed into the Gulf Coast two weeks ago, which was the same week that marked the 15-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Episcopal Relief & Development is in constant communication with the impacted dioceses working to reach vulnerable populations devastated by the storm. Please donate today to support these efforts. Go to:
to donate online, or you make make out a check to Christ Church, Frederica and write, "ER&D - Hurricane Relief" in the memo line.
Pandemic Relief - 10,000 Face Masks!FaceMasks
Many thanks to all of you who have supported our Pandemic Relief Fund in recent months. With your help, we have been able to purchase 10,000 masks for students in all the schools in Glynn County Public School System. Thousands have already been distributed, but we still have a ways to go.

We need more folks to help iron on decals, as we work towards our goal to create masks for ALL children in the Glynn County school system. If you can iron mask decals, please contact Glenn Queener at 912-638-8683 or at [email protected] and he'll arrange for you to pick up a bundle. We're committed to this outreach to help keep our children, school staffs, and community a little bit safer during this pandemic!

Any support you can offer to help with this endeavor is appreciated. You can contribute to the Christ Church Pandemic Fund HERE. Please choose Pandemic Response Fund.
Thank You for the Tremendous Response to the Request for School Supplies!

Many thanks to all who donated so generously to our school supply drive for Glynn Episcopal Ministries. The church office was absolutely packed with backpacks, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, disinfecting supplies and a plethora of other essential items. Everything has now been sorted and boxes are being delivered to multiple Glynn County schools! Thank you, Christ Church!
Computer Laptops Needed for Students Who Are Virtual Learning This YearLaptopsNeeded
For a variety of reasons, which include individual children's health issues and the compromised health of family members at home, many youngsters in Glynn County will be learning from home this school year. In order to do so, they will need computers to access the virtual learning programs provided by Glynn County.

Unfortunately, purchasing a computer is not economically feasible in many households, so we are asking for donations of any used, functioning laptops (less than 10 years old) for the children who will need them to do their schoolwork. Used computers may be dropped off at the Christ Church Parish House during normal business hours, but please call ahead at 912-638-8683 to make sure someone is available to receive your donation. It is best to wipe the memory of your computer, before donating it.

If you'd like to help get a computer into the hands of a child who needs one, and don't have a used one to spare, you may also make a donation to the Christ Church Pandemic Fund and designate the funds for Computers for Students. The average cost of a Chromebook, like the ones used in the schools, is $275.

Thank you for your help with this ministry! At Christ Church, we are committed to making the school year a success for as many children as possible!
The Backpack Buddies Update

School's back in session in Glynn County and we're happy to announce that the Backpack Buddies are back in the schools, delivering weekend meals once again! Our committed team of drivers, assembly line preppers, bag packers, and delivery personnel have switched from our unique mode of handling the summer pandemic food
Fifth graders lend a hand delivering food bags to the younger Buddies.
program, to our more traditional method of packing and delivering directly to the schools that serve our Buddies. That doesn't mean the work gets any easier though and we always welcome new hands to make this mission run more smoothly! If you're interested in joining the merry band of Backpack Buddies, please contact Susan Shipman and she'll happily find a place for you!

Delivery Help Needed

We do have a request for help with deliveries of food for shut-in seniors who are served by St. Athanasius. If you're interested in helping with this outreach, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Adopt a Buddy!

If you've thought about adopting a young buddy, or have had one in the past, this is a great time to begin a new sponsorship for 2020-2021. You can "adopt" a child for the upcoming year for $100, which will supply the youngster with weekend food bags for the entire school year. You  are welcome to donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies)  or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program).

Foods We Need This Week

We have a few items that we'd love to add to our assembly line this week. In addition to the sorely needed juice boxes, we could definitely use some fruit for our buddies.

*  JUICE BOXES!
*  Fruit Cups (any kind)
*  Applesauce Cups

Also, our friends at the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry, in Brunswick, definitely need a few items for the folks who are served there. This week's wish list for St. Athanasius includes:

*  Full Size Boxes of Cereal
*  Cans of Soup
*  Canned Beans (green, kidney, pinto, etc.)

We are always grateful for your help with the Backpack Buddies mission! If you have any items you'd like to donate this week, they may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House. If you have any questions about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Diocesan Convention - November 6-7, 2020
This year, our Diocese has decided to hold our annual convention completely virtual. In order to make this possible, we needed to find a virtual venue that will provide a safe, clear and simple way to interact and allow the body to conduct all the business that needs to be done.

Our selection, Hopin, allows us to create a custom, virtual stage to allow attendees to watch speeches and attend events. This will include pre-recorded material, speeches, live sessions and break-out meetings. In addition, there are features that allow for more social interactions such as booths and expos for groups within the convention.

We chose Hopin because it is easy to navigate: allowing users to see a full calendar and join sessions with the click of a button. If you have used Zoom, Teams or any other teleconference software, many of Hopin's features should be familiar to you. There will be more updates about Hopin and other details about our virtual venue in the weeks to come.

Registration, Convention Schedule, and Platform Demonstrations

Convention Registration will open on Friday, September 11 and will only be available online.

This year's Convention Schedule will look a little different than past conventions. Convention will begin on Friday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. and will conclude Saturday afternoon. We hope that this will allow participation by those who might not be able to attend Convention otherwise because they are not able to miss work.

In order to make it as easy as possible for delegates to use the online platform (Hopin) when Convention begins, we will be offering test runs and training sessions at various times during the coming months. Hopin also provides their own free demonstrations on request at their website. We encourage all delegates to start looking at Hopin on their own, in addition to attending Diocesan training sessions. These sessions will be announced at a later date.

Look for more information in future convention newsletters for additional registration information, convention scheduling, and platform instruction.
