Spread the Word About the Earned Income Tax Credit: EITC Awareness Day is January 25th
EITC Awareness Day is a great opportunity to increase eligibility awareness of refundable credits that many miss claiming or don't get right. On January 25th, join other organizations, elected officials, government agencies, schools, employers and others to spread the word about the EITC. Why is getting the word out so important? The IRS estimates four of five eligible taxpayers claim and get the EITC. Best of all, EITC (combined with the Child Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit) is a financial boost for working people and your local economy. EITC greatly reduces poverty for working families. These working family credits have lifted an estimated 9.4 million people out of poverty, including 5 million or more than half of them children.
Kimbra, who is currently serving a second year as an AmeriCorps member with Rappahannock Goodwill - Goodskills Literacy Corps in Fredericksburg, says the experience has opened up a whole new world to her. "I've had an exciting service year and as I begin on my second term I am elated on what I will discover about myself and others that I tutor," she says. "The most rewarding experience is meeting and interacting with a diversity of people. This volunteer position has enlightened me in enormous ways. Between the personal development training, conferences, workshops and online studies -- I feel confident that AmeriCorps will propel me into being an unrestricted mouthpiece for volunteers around the community and the country. I hope to at least once speak at a workshop or host an AmeriCorps Launch this year!"
