The Book Nook

GIVING MADE EASY

Do you find yourself wanting to praise the Lord by giving back to Him a portion of the many blessings He has so generously showered upon you?  Have you been sitting in the pew when the collection plate is being passed and you realize you have little or no cash and you don't carry a checkbook?  Have you been out of town or sick on Sunday and not sure how to handle your weekly tithe in those instances?  We have all been there.

The church office will provide you a self-addressed envelope upon request, if you wish to mail a check.  But why not utilize the online giving option?  Online giving is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It can be accessed by going to the church website,  www.wrightsboroumc.org, and choosing the red Give button in the upper right corner, or by clicking the link, "click here to give online", in the weekly announcement email. Simply pick the amount of your tithe or offering and where you wish the funds to be applied, check out and you are done.  You can even elect to set it up as a recurring payment to ensure the funds are sent each week without any extra work on your part.

What an easy way to ensure the missions of WUMC are able to continue and grow.  I am proud that we offer multiple options for our congregation, and I encourage you to at least check it out to see if it would be a good fit for you.

Thoughts from Pastor David...

Greetings, friends,

Happy New Year!!!   It's hard to believe that 2019 is officially here.   I believe the beginning of a new year is a good time to look back and reflect upon the past year, and also look forward to the new one.   It is an opportunity to close out the old year and start fresh with the new one.

I remember when most of us greeted the new year  with a list of resolutions - plans to improve some aspect of our lives in the coming year.   They don't seem to be as popular as they once were, but I still hear about them now and then.   And they still include the same goals: losing weight, beginning an exercise routine, eating a healthier diet, spending more time with friends and/or family, giving up a bad habit or beginning a good one, and so forth.   Anything that helps to improve our health and relationships is certainly commendable, but shouldn't we also be considering how we might improve our spiritual lives and our walk with Christ?   After all - if we resolve and strive to be more like Christ, I believe all those other things will more easily fall into place.

I suggest we look at this from two (2) perspectives.  First, what do we need to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new one?  Many of us carry around such things as a hurt or grudge that we are reluctant to let go of; or, perhaps an unwillingness to forgive ourselves for something we have done or failed to do.  These are heavy and destructive burdens to carry around, and they will hinder our walk with Christ throughout the coming year.  We need to leave these behind in the old year, and let them stay there!

Second, what can we add to our lives in the coming year to strengthen our relationship with Christ?  Perhaps we could get more involved in serving in His church or reaching out more to those around us who need help.  We could also work on improving our Bible study habits - both on our own with such things as daily devotions, or by attending Sunday school and/or Bible study on a regular basis.  Perhaps we could commit to strengthening our prayer life, setting aside time each day for prayer and meditation and make it a priority.  These are just a few things that come to mind, and I'm sure there are many others.

God has blessed us richly during 2018, both as individuals and as a church.  But more importantly, I believe that even greater blessings are in store for us in 2019.  Let's continue to do our part and live into the wonderful plans He has for us!

Grace & peace,
Pastor David

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

December was a busy month for us. Heavenly Harold was our Christmas program on Dec 9th.  All ages were included in it. The Good News Singers sang a song, "Twas The Light Before Christmas", in the adult choir's cantata on Dec 16th and "Wonderful Counselor" on Dec 23rd. Our annual sleepover at the church was Dec 27th - 29th , with 16 children and 5 adults helping. We caroled at one private home and 3 retirement homes. We went to the Bounce house and we bowled. We watched movies and played games. We made pizzas, cookies, brownies, finger jello, cup cakes and macaroni and cheese and we ate them all. We had a great time.

January is a time for new beginnings and we are looking to include more children in our Sunday School classes. Miss Courtney teaches the younger children and Mrs. Pam teaches the older elementary children. We meet every Sunday at 9:45 am in the Education Building. Your children, grandchildren and your neighbor's children need to know and grow in Christ. Please help us to bring the Gospel to life in them.

The Good News singers practice every Wednesday evening at 6:30 after the family dinner. We sing every month in church, usually the third Sunday. After practicing, we have a snack and then the older children act out a Bible skit, while the younger children do a simple craft or coloring project. We finish at 7:30 pm. We look forward to including your child in the fun. If you have any questions, please talk to Pam Lipka (910-706-1252) or Courtney Hodges.
YOUTH EVENTS

We meet every Wednesday evening at 6:30pm and Sunday mornings at 9:45am.

Thanks to all who supported the UMW projects in 2018.
The UMW mission focus is on ministries to women, children and youth. In 2018, Wrightsboro United Methodist Women assembled 146 school kits, 66 birthing kits, and 30 sewing kits. Most of these were delivered to the Merci Center in Goldsboro. We delivered over 1000 books to Wrightsboro Elementary School, donated time and monies to the Rise Against Hunger meal packing event and contributed to other church ministries. We also offered Joyce Meyer's Women's Conference as a telecast open to all women in the church. This was made possible through your support of our Candle Burning fundraiser and other donations. Thank You.

Books for Wrightsboro Elementary School Summer Reading 2019: We are collecting age appropriate books for Wrightsboro Elementary School. Books can be brought to the church and placed in the basket provided.

Questions about UMW items in the newsletter or about WUMW can be sent to Eva Czepiel at [email protected]
MISSIONS AND OUTREACH

CHRISTMAS MINISTRIES

W rightsboro Church furnished Christmas joy to three families from our community this year.  Our Angel tree was loaded with toys and clothes for seven children who might not have had a very merry Christmas without your generosity.  We also sponsored six angels from the Methodist Home for Children.  Our folks went the extra mile this season.  Some gifts had to be ordered but everything got here on time for delivery.  One of our children from MHC received five free horseback riding lessons from the daughter of one of our members.  It was definitely the season of love and giving for Wrightsboro  UMC.

The Missions committee also furnished back packs and school supplies for the Methodist Home for Children in December.

MERCI

If you are interested in a work day at the MERCI Warehouse January 17, please sign up in the narthex.  If enough volunteers want to go we will take the van and work from 10:00 till 3:00.  As I always say, the best BBQ comes from Goldsboro!  So join us for a day of fellowship, helping others to have a better life, and lunch.

MEALS ON WHEELS

We continue to serve the shut ins in our community with a hot meal on the first Saturday of each month.  Our  route is temporarily down four people who have not been able to return home after Hurricane Florence.  We anticipate, and pray, that they will be back home soon.

CRAFTY FRIDAY

The new year has come bringing many opportunities to share God's love with others.  The next Crafty Friday project is a Valentine gift for the Wrightsboro Elementary staff.  Here is a hint as to what we will be working on....it involves a simple sewing stitch, felt, thread, and rice!  The final hint...cupid might try to use them for target practice!

Please join us on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall for fellowship and help us make these gifts.  Contact Gail Nunn,    [email protected], for more information about this ministry.

Operation Enduring Love

Hello WUMC!

Happy New Year!

I received an e-mail from  our Marines over in Iraq.  They were so very happy to get their I-tune gift cards, and said that the knitted toboggans made by the Crafty Friday ladies would keep their heads warm at night!  The  soldiers also expressed their deepest gratitude for all the most welcome Christmas cards.  A total of 162 were sent.  Everyone's  thoughts and sentiments seemed to have really touched their hearts at the core.  I am so very proud of our church family!  I am so happy that you all reach out to our men and women in our Armed Forces and pay them the respect and give them the love they so deserve!  Thank you all and again,  Happy New Year and God bless you and yours.

With the Love of Christ,

Pam Spencer
