Mission Sunday Thank You
Last week, we had a lot of fun and were able to serve God, the Earth, and the community through our Mission Sunday projects on Earth Day. Thanks to all the team leaders, all those who loaned equipment and tools, all those who came and worked, all those who served as greeters for our guests, and everyone who donated in any way.

Sermon:   "Love Actuated "
Scripture Lesson : Luke 10:25-29

This Sunday
Our church's mission statement is "Aldersgate is a vibrant, inclusive Christian community growing in faith, love, health and service." The phrase The Great Commandment is often used to describe the two most important commandments cited by Jesus in three of the gospels. "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." The first of these, of course, comes from Deuteronomy and the second from Leviticus. If you want to look them all up and compare them in context, here are the scriptures.
- Deuteronomy 6:4-5
- Leviticus 19:18
- Matthew 22:35-40
- Mark 12:28-31
- Luke 10:25-28
These are foundational to who we are as Christians and the most important acts we perform as Christians are acts of love. I was a child of the love generation and we use the word love in a lot of different and sometimes not completely appropriate ways from "God is love" to "I love you man" to "I love pizza." But in the end, true love of God, self and others comes down to The Great Commandment. This Sunday, I would like us to think about how we deliver God's love to the world.
MINISTRY NEWS
Stewardship Letter & Pledge Card
Stewardship Sunday May 6th
The stewardship letter and pledge card were mailed out to the congregation earlier this week. We hope that you've had time to pray about your pledge to support Aldergate's programs and missions. Our goals are to have a balanced budget for the new fiscal year, July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019, and to pay off our kitchen remodel loan by December 31, 2018. Please prayerfully consider how you can support Aldersgate through your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and love. Contact Pastor Laura or Melinda Lilley with your questions. Please return your pledge card on Sunday, May 6th or drop it at the church office.  In case you missed our stewardship mailing,  CLICK HERE  for the letter and pledge card. Your pledge is an invaluable part of planning for the future at Aldersgate, so that we can continue to be a place where love overflows.
Ready to Join Us?
If you are not a member of Aldersgate Church and would like to join, we will welcome new members on June 3 in both services. For more information, email Pastor Laura or see her on Sunday.
Peace & Justice Sunday
May 20
Sunday May 20 is Peace and Justice Sunday and we will take a special offering that supports ministries that teach and advocate for principles of peace and justice in our church conference and around the world. Through this observance we are witness to God's demand for a faithful, just, disarmed and secure world. Please give generously.
Wear Red on Pentecost
On May 20 in morning worship, we will celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the early church at Pentecost. The tradition is that the Holy Spirit gave the gift of being able to speak in new languages so the stories of Jesus could be shared. As part of our celebration this year, the sanctuary will be decorated in red. You can help by wearing red that day. To honor the multiple cultural heritage traditions that make up the Aldersgate family, we would love to hear a prayer or reading in your language sometime in the Pentecost season. If you are willing to help translate or read in a language you speak that is not English, see Pastor Laura
Calling All Graduates!
We will celebrate Aldersgate's graduating seniors (high school and college) during worship on June 3 . Please send us the graduate's picture along with a brief description of their accomplishments, future plans and the school graduating from as listed on the back of the attendance form. Please get this information to Jen Hoerber by May 23 so the graduates can each be highlighted in a special bulletin insert.
Confirmation Corner
We have six youth participating in confirmation this year. Their prayer quilts are hanging in the narthex and will remain there until Confirmation Sunday on June 10th. Please say a prayer for these young people during this spiritual journey and tie a knot in their quilt. You are invited to follow along in this journey with them by reading this Confirmation Corner

This past week in confirmation we discussed the ins and outs of worship.  We even had some of our band and choir members visit and share how music is an important part of worship and how they got involved and why.  We discussed the two sacraments in the Methodist church: communion and baptism.  The class appreciated the open table approach to communion that the Methodist denomination believes  in.    The New Commandment (John 13:34-35) was covered and we had a lively discussion of how that helps determine our view and reaction to social principals and determines our response with being a missional church.
Resource Library News
Aldersgate Poems  has been updated to include Bob Olson's latest poems entitled "Service" and "Consideration" on pages 159 and 160, respectively.  This volume is displayed on the library mobile cart.  Please see pages 154-157 for other recent works.
Summer Music
Calling all musicians! We are looking for any type of special music for the second service during the summer from mid-June through August. Voice, piano, small ensembles, bells or brass, all are welcome to share their gifts and talents with the congregation. Please contact Hanae Straub for more information.
Singers & Players Needed
Do you have a hidden talent for music that you'd like to put to use?  Or, maybe you know someone that doesn't come to church, but would benefit from having a place to display their musical talents for a loving and appreciative audience?   The 1st service worship band is always looking for players and singers to contribute their musical gifts, both often, and occasionally.  Our biggest need at present is for a bass player and a guitarist.  Seekers AND Believers are welcome. Young AND old are welcome.  All that is needed is a smidgen of talent, a desire to learn and be part of a grace filled music community, and willingness to show up early on a  Sunday  morning.  Practices are  on Thursday  evening.   Please help us grow by planting the bug in the ear of the musician that has not yet come forward.  You could be giving THEM a gift of a lifetime.    Contact 1st Service Music Director Roger Ingalls or 425-894-8173.

Green Team Update
Tuesday, May 8
Beyond Mission Sunday, Green Team wants you to have information about matters related to climate change that will affect you. First, there is an Initiative filed with the State of Washington that many faith communities and people of faith are supporting as a way to reduce carbon emissions and protect Creation. The initiative is in the process of gathering signatures to determine if it will appear on the November ballot. Please find attached more information about why people of faith are working in alliance with others to bring this initiative to WA voters. In addition, there is an event coming up at UW on  May 15 from 7-9pm where Katherine Hayhoe, professor on climate science from Texas Tech University and a Christian will speak about the intersection of her faith, her science, and her advocacy. Hayhoe has been named one of TIME's 100 most influential people and one of Fortune 500's World's Greatest Leaders.
