Dear Lovejoy Community:
It was great to see so many of you at the Majestics Spring Show on Friday night. The event was excellent. Congratulations to everyone who participated in making this an exceptional show.

The Board of Trustees approved changes to the 2018-2019 calendar at the April 18th Board meeting.
Beginning with the 2018-2019 calendar, districts may only have a maximum of 2,100 minutes of professional development which may count toward the required number of student instructional minutes (75,600). Given this change and to accommodate prior requests from the community, the following key dates are included in the udpated calendar:

As you will notice, three days (October 17, January 7, March 20) in the 2018-2019 calendar will be regular school days for K-8 and a student holiday for LHS students. This will allow LHS teachers to participate in additional professional learning. We are able to accommodate this high school schedule because our LHS students have a longer school day with more instructional minutes than K-8.

Lovejoy Elementary School hosted its inaugural campout on April 13th, and Hart Elementary School hosted its inaugural campout this past Friday. Both events were a great success.
The Campouts offered a wide variety of activities, including bounce houses, glow parties, movies under the stars, and much more. The grand finale of each event is a campout on the playgrounds. The remaining campout is scheduled as follows:
Puster Elementary School - Friday, April 27th
We are anticipating all campers to be in their tents by 11:00 PM. We value our neighbors and are sharing this information to prepare you for the evening activities and tents on the playgrounds.

Places at Code Quest

Congratulations to the LHS Computer Science Team on their recent success at Lockheed Martin's "Code Quest." Over 60 teams competed, with Lovejoy's Advanced Team taking 3rd place and the Novice Team bringing home a 1st place win.

Danny has had several surgeries and encountered significant expenses related to his recovery. WSMS Presents Gift to City House
|
The WSMS Library recently held a Book Fair Coin Drive to benefit City House. Due to the generosity of the WSMS community, more than $1,400 was raised for books for City House in Plano. Kathy Stone and Kay Bordelon (WSMS Counselors) joined WSMS Librarian, Beth Lowry, to deliver the donation. The mission of City House is to provide emergency shelter and transitional residential services to children and young adults who are in need due to abuse, neglect or homelessness. Early voting for the May 5th school board election began on Monday, April 23rd. The terms expiring in 2018 are Place 6 and Place 7. Place 6 candidates are Al Litchenburg (incumbent) and Jennifer Kline. Incumbent Scott Christiansen is running unopposed for Place 7.  Advanced Placement Testing
Dear Lovejoy Community:
It is hard to believe we have only 26 days of school left in this school year. In early May, Lovejoy High School will look quite different as a multitude of Advanced Placement (AP) tests are administered during the first two weeks of the month. In fact, the number of tests given will be 1,617, to be taken by 837 students in grades 9-12.
Lovejoy High School allows all students to enroll in an AP course if they so choose. If students elect to take an AP course, they must take the AP course exam in May. This is a unique requirement in Lovejoy and, despite this expectation, the mean score in nearly all of the AP courses exceeds either the mean score for Texas and/or the United States.
Advanced Placement tests are scored on a scale of 1-5. Scores of 3 or better are considered passing by the College Board and most colleges and universities. Regardless of whether the college or university accepts the AP exam score for credit, research clearly indicates the benefits to students. In 2007, UT Austin did a comparative study among:
- students who took AP courses and exams in high school
- students who took dual credit courses at a community college while in high school
- students who did neither dual credit nor AP while in high school
The study revealed that even among the students enrolled at this Tier 1 University, AP students outperformed their peers in college GPA, and with a greater percentage earning a degree and completing their degree at a faster pace. This research finding held true even for students who earned a 2 (a failing exam score) on an AP exam. The research from the College Board points to a clear pattern of current and future academic benefits for students who participate in Advanced Placement courses.
This research shaped the development of our academic program in Lovejoy. We know the vast majority of our students attend a college or university after graduating from Lovejoy High School. Given that we want our students to be prepared for post-secondary success, an excellent avenue for preparation is to take at least one AP course in high school. The Advanced Placement courses are college courses taught within the structures and supports of the high school environment. The level of course rigor and teacher expectations mirrors what our students will experience in college. This allows our students to be better prepared when faced with the increased rigor of post-secondary education.
In Lovejoy, we are fortunate to have students who live in homes where education is valued and supported. This allows the district to attract and retain the best and brightest teachers to help students learn and achieve tremendous accomplishments in a variety of endeavors, including academics, fine arts, and athletics.

WSMS Presents Charlotte's Web
April 26th - 28th
This is a classic story for all time. The genuine, unconditional love for a friend, true companionship, learning to meet new people, and a willingness to risk an adventure or two - these are just an ounce of the homespun values this play delivers. Come to the farm! Come to the fair! Come see a new tail or revisit an old friend!
The family favorite is spinning into WSMS Theatre April 26th - 28th. Shows will begin at 7:00 PM each evening, with a Saturday matinee at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. Cotton candy will be freshly spun for each show.

WSMS Choir
Congratulations to the 19 WSMS Choir students who participated in the Region 25 All-Region Choir this past Saturday. These students enjoyed making amazing music with singers from surrounding districts.

LHS Choir
Last week was very successful for the Lovejoy Choirs. Congratulations to Varsity Mixed, Varsity Women, Varsity Men, Varsity Muses, and JV Women for earning Sweepstakes (an overall rating of 1 on stage and in sight-reading), and to JV Men for earning a rating of 2 on stage and 1 in sight-reading. The judges were very complimentary to all choirs, and the Varsity Mixed choir stood out in particular in the sight-reading room. After their second reading of the selection, the judges applauded (something that never happens) and told them they were the best choir they heard at the entire contest. They made music out of a song they were reading at sight, and the judges were both astounded and appreciative. We are #lovejoyproud.

Lovejoy Baseball
The Varsity Leopards won a dramatic playoff game last night against the Royse City Bulldogs 4-1. The win places the Leopards in a tie for the final playoff spot in District 15-5A. The Leopards will travel to Royse City this Friday to conclude their 15-5A schedule with a winner-take-all contest. The winner will advance to the 2018 UIL State Playoffs. The game is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

Lovejoy Golf
Jay Pabin shot a two-round score of 150 at the UIL Region II Golf Tournament, placing him in the top 15 in the Region.
The freshman had two good days of golf and missed the cut to State by only a few positions.
Allie Bianchi began play in the UIL Region II Golf Tournament today. The tournament will conclude tomorrow with round two. Best wishes to Allie for a most successful meet.

Lovejoy Softball
The Lady Leopards clinched a playoff spot and will compete against Sulphur Springs in a 3-game series this week. Lovejoy will host the first game tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Lovejoy will travel to Sulphur Springs on Friday for a 7:00 PM game. If a third game is necessary, Lovejoy will play Sulphur Springs at Royse City at 12:00 PM.
The JV team split their last week with a win against Poteet and a loss against Royse City. The JV Lady Leopards competed very well over the course of the season and despite the loss, finished the season with a winning record. Congratulations to the JV Lady Leopards.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Tennis Team had five players competing in the UIL Region 2 Tennis Tournament last week at the Allen Tennis Center. Congratulations to Samantha Hayward and Daniela Benigno for advancing to the Region II Semi-Finals and finishing as the 3rd place medalists in girls' doubles. Also qualifying for Regionals in mixed doubles were Carson Zimmermann and Polly Roth, and in boys singles, Caiden Tays. Congratulations to the Leopard Tennis team on another great season.

Lovejoy Track
The Lovejoy Track Teams traveled to Longview Pine Tree Stadium this past Thursday to compete in the UIL Region II Area Track and Field Meet. The Boys Track team repeated as Area Champions and have many Regional Qualifiers representing Lovejoy Track. The Boys Team will travel to UTA Track and Field Stadium this Friday and Saturday to compete in the UIL Region II Track and Field Championships.
The Varsity Girls Track and Field team claimed the Area Meet Runner-Up Title at the Area 15-16 5A meet in Longview. This is the highest place finish for the girls team at the Area Meet in program history. There were several great performances, with a total of 8 female athletes qualifying for the Region II 5A Championship in Arlington.

Special Olympics Volunteers Needed
Lovejoy ISD is hosting the North Texas Special Olympics Spring Games on Friday, April 27th and Saturday, April 28th. The event will be held at Lovejoy High School, with over 1,500 Special Olympics athletes competing in track and field, tennis, and soccer competitions. Lovejoy High School Musical Theatre Camp
The Lovejoy High School Theatre Department will produce Disney's The Jungle Book - Kids this summer.
Students will work together to produce and perform Disney's The Jungle Book- Kids. Students will develop confidence, sharpen their musical and theatrical skills, and create wonderful memories along the way. Directed by Jessica Brewster, LHS Head Theatre Director, and musically directed by Anne Tracy, Puster Elementary Music Specialist, this show will be sure to be an unforgettable experience.
There are three camp opportunities available, which will run simultaneously:
● Lovejoy HS Summer Musical Theatre Camp
- for students completing 3rd grade through 6th grade who want to perform on stage.
● Lovejoy HS Summer Technical Theatre Camp
- for students completing 3rd grade through 6th grade who want to work behind the scenes.

- for students completing 7th grade through 8th grade who want to work with the LHS Theatre staff to produce the show.

Safety and Security
Safety and security remain our highest priorities. We have specific plans at each campus in response to a security breach. We continue to consider additional measures to address both the perception of safety, as well as the actual safety on every campus.
We would like to ask for your assistance. If you have information about a threat to the safety of a student, staff member, campus, or the district, we ask you to report it.
SafeSchools is our online safety compliance program, which is specifically designed for school use, incident management, and bullying reporting. This program allows students, staff, and parents to report tips on bullying, harassment, intimidation, weapons, drugs, or other threats to school safety by e-mail, via website, text, or by calling 469.919.5861. This system allows us to stay connected and to prevent incidents before they occur. Staff are immediately notified of every tip, and can effectively track and manage incidents to resolution in this web-based system. Multiple administrators throughout the district monitor submissions to assure entries are addressed in a timely manner. Once a tip is entered, tipsters can easily check on the status of their tip and remain anonymous. School officials are notified through e-mail when tips are created and/or updated.
Posters are displayed in every classroom and hallways throughout each of the Lovejoy campuses, providing information as to how to enter a tip.
If you have information about a threat to our safety, do your part and report it. Please remember, you may remain anonymous.

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. Elementary Spotlight Exhibition
Now - May 8th
Puster, Hart and Lovejoy Elementary Visual Arts Departments invite you to attend the Annual Lovejoy Visual Arts (LJVA) Elementary Spotlight Exhibition on display in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery from April 24th through May 8th. This exhibition will feature selected works to showcase each grade level (K-4) from Puster, Hart and Lovejoy Elementary Schools.

LHS Color Guard Auditions
April 30th - May 3rd
Open auditions for female and male students interested in joining the award winning Lovejoy Guard performance ensemble will be held April 30th - May 3rd in the LHS Fine Arts Dance Studio from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. No experience is necessary. Auditions are open to students who will be in the 9th - 12th grades at Lovejoy High School during the 2018-2019 school year. Treasured Vessels Foundation
May 10th
The Treasured Vessels Foundation (TVF) is a local, non-profit which assists adolescent girls who have been recovered from domestic sex trafficking. TVF is building a secure community of tiny homes which will provide 24/7 therapeutic programing, with an emphasis in trauma-specific care. The program provides the tools these children need to develop a vision for a new, healthy, happy, and independent life.
You are invited to partner with TVF on May 10th at the Allen Event Center for a benefit concert featuring Emerald City Band and Lovejoy band "Friday Night School". You may purchase tickets at the box office or through Ticketmaster.
