At the 122nd Boston Marathon on April 16, Folsom resident
Shadrack Biwott placed third among 14,000 male racers in the annual race.
It also happens that Biwott is the father to two children - a fifth grader and a Transitional Kindergarten student - at Carl Sundahl Elementary School in Folsom. Biwott visited the school on April 20 to speak to students at an outdoor assembly, to inspire them to do well and persevere in their upcoming state tests.
"Work hard, persevere and everything will be okay," Bitwott told students during his simple and important message.

| Cordova High Drama puts on first musical in 20 years |
Cordova High School's growing Drama Department put on their first musical, "The Little Shop of Horrors" in 20 years, thanks to a classroom resource grant from the American Theatre Wing for $12,000.
"The Little Shop of Horrors" was held April 12-14, crowds turned out to see this exciting musical production. Opening day more than 300 people attended and the total attendance for all four performances was more than 800. Ticket sale funds go back directly to support the drama program at Cordova High.
Student Nathan Maze had a supporting role in the musical and said, " It was a great experience to be a part of the play and get to see how a musical is put together."

| Folsom High student leaders support LGBT youth success |
Dozens of parents, students, and community members used their Tuesday night to learn about ways they can best support LGBT youth - and ways student leaders are working hard to do just that in Folsom Cordova Unified School District schools.
Folsom High's annual Parent Night, sponsored by the school's Gay-Straight Alliance club, promised an evening of education and acceptance as club officers and other speakers offered insight into the experiences of LGBT youth.
Emma Harvey, a Folsom High senior and GSA co-president, told the audience that the event's goal is to help create welcoming, inclusive and emotionally safe learning environments for all youth and to support students or families struggling at home.

| School resource officer retires after 23 years of service to the community |
After a 23-year career in law enforcement and most recently for the past two years as a Rancho Cordova School Resource Officer for 19 local schools, Officer C.T. Smith has retired.
Smith was best known for mentoring students and addressing public safety concerns. Smith served as a direct contact for school staff if a problem arose.
"The school administrators and teachers treated me like I was part of their team," said Officer C.T. Smith. "They dedicate so much to supporting each school, and I have enjoyed this position in my law enforcement career because of that."
"Officer Smith was a supportive and caring School Resource Officer for our Rancho Cordova schools, and he will be greatly missed," said
Williamson Elementary Principal Angi Carlomagno. " Carlomagno recalled a favorite memory of Officer Smith playing football with 5th grade students during recess.
Congratulations to Officer C.T. Smith on his retirement and thank you for serving our schools.

The FCEF enhances the educational experience of our over 20,000 students within the Folsom Cordova Unified School District. Over the past three years, FCEF has awarded over $89,000 in grants and other funding to support our student programs.

FCEF has partnered with Barnes & Noble at the Palladio in Folsom on May 3 from 4-8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds spent in the bookstore or restaurant will benefit FCEF. There will be some fun Star Wars related literacy activities, art and games for kids to enjoy.

Join us for the 29th Annual Kids Day in the Park presented by the Cordova Community Council.
This year's theme is High Flyers. There will be rides, crafts, games and more with more than 100 exhibitors. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

The event is Saturday, April 28 from 11-3 p.m. at Hagan Park, which is located at 2197 Chase Dr. in Rancho Cordova.

The FCUSD Board of Education
held its regular meeting on Thursday, April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
