If one of your resolutions for the new year is for your team to work safer, the 2018 Annual Winter Conference is a can't miss opportunity for high-quality safety training. Whether you are a company executive, project manager, superintendent, or craft worker, there is something at this conference that will help you work or lead with safety as a priority.

We are also offering additional seminars to address environmental issues, such as lead, asbestos, and silica safety, as well as general safety topics including fall protection, distracted driving, and confined spaces. Attendees will also have the opportunity to gain industry recognized credentials in powder actuated tools, laser operator, and supervisor / management drug awareness.

MBI has registered in favor of two specific bills that would provide benefits to construction companies:
  1. House Study Bill 524: an Act relating to mechanics' liens, public construction liens, and the early release of retained funds. This bill is accompanied by Senate Study Bill 3039 and mirror each other in the language. This is our bill that we drafted and makes two changes to mechanic's lien laws. Subcommittee in the House is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:30AM. Rep. Andy McKean (R-Anamosa), Rep. Ross Paustian (R-Walcott) and Rep. Ras Smith (D-Waterloo) are on the subcommittee.
  2. House Study Bill 509: an Act relating to motor vehicles approaching stationary construction vehicles, and providing penalties. The intent is to require motorists to reduce speed, make a lane change, and/or express caution when approaching a stationary construction vehicle. Last Thursday, a subcommittee was scheduled, but was cancelled for unknown reasons.

As an industry, we are constantly looking for ways to complete projects faster, more economically, and safely, all while keeping our eye on the pulse of technology and the latest trends. Those in the commercial construction industry understand that as chaotic as this all sounds, it is necessary to complete the projects being built and designed every day!

As part of our 2018 Annual Winter Conference scheduled for February 27 & 28, MBI has scheduled two full days of seminars covering many relevant topics for commercial construction, which will be delivered by some of the best and brightest minds in the industry.  >>>Read More

In December, the MBI Board of Directors approved their 2018 legislative agenda that included recommendations from the MBI Government Affairs Committee.  Throughout the summer and fall, our public affairs team has been working to identify priorities that we would focus on to improve the commercial construction industry.

There is always something interesting going on at the Iowa Statehouse during the legislative session and in an effort to enhance MBI's advocacy efforts and keep members informed, our public affairs team will host a series of webinars during the 2018 legislative session.  >>>Read More

Sitting a few chairs away was a student, maybe 16 years old, wearing a Yankees ball cap. >>>Read More
