A weekly newsletter to keep you informed about EVERYTHING Turf at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Welcome back and Happy New Year! Our first Turf Talk we will discuss the record-breaking 2018!
It’s a new record!
Congratulations to all of us in the DMV area, we’ve done it! We’ve broken the record for total rainfall in 2018, maybe a record we would have like to have gone without breaking! If we all take a moment to look back on the weather of 2018, we would remember that it was a year of the craziest weather some of us have seen their entire lifetime! One of the few constants from the year was rain. We crushed our rain totals from 2017 here at the SoccerPlex by nearly quadruple!

In this record breaking year we saw over 80 inches of rain here at the SoccerPlex! In 2017 our end of year total was 27.76 inches and in 2016, 27.49 inches of rain total. Our nearby neighbor of Washington D.C. also shattered a record that was 129 years old!!! Their 66.28 inches of rain broke the previous record of 61.33 inches.
What effect does this have?
The vast amount of rain made our grounds crew extremely frustrated week after week. This issue of having so much rain is that even when it appeared the grass was dry, the soil under it would still be extremely saturated. This prevented our grounds crew from putting any heavy machinery on the fields, including mowers which made field maintenance extremely difficult. Regardless our crew often found ways around the extreme wetness to try to get fields open and ready for play.

The issue of too much rain was not one experience just at the SoccerPlex. There was flooding, and flash flooding repeatedly throughout the DMV area including the flood in Ellicott City, and the numerous flash floods in the city of Frederick, as well as flooding throughout Washington D.C.; Many other sports fields and even golf courses ran into the issue of oversaturation that we here at the Plex suffered with.
By the numbers...
Throughout 2018 we had 6 days where at least 1 inch of rain fell in a single day. Our highest 1-day total of rain at the SoccerPlex was on July 21 when we received 3.34 inches of rain! July was our wettest month with 7.33 inches of rain, but September was a close second with 7.15 inches of rain total. To put into comparison, the highest total of rainfall in a month for 2017 was 5.35 inches in July. Out of the 52 Fridays and Saturdays a year, we had rain events on 31 of them! This is important because the later week rain storms do not allow the fields to dry out before our weekend events, thus causing more issues than if it was a rain on Monday or Tuesday. More specifically, this fall and winter 15 out of 16 weekends had rain events! While we do enjoy a nice rain storm from time-to-time our grounds crew, as well as grounds crews in the area, are definitely hoping for less in 2019!
