At OCWA, this is an exciting year as it marks a quarter century of delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective water and wastewater services to communities across Ontario. 

There are many great 25th anniversary festivities to come and we look forward to celebrating this important milestone with all of you throughout the year.


New Municipal Asset Management Plan Regulation

On January 1, 2018, Ontario Regulation 588/17: Asset Management Planning for Municipal Infrastructure came into effect. The regulation sets out requirements for municipal asset management planning to help municipalities better understand their infrastructure needs and inform infrastructure planning and investment decisions. 
 
OCWA can assist you in developing a management plan for your water, wastewater and stormwater assets and ensure that you meet the new regulatory requirements. We've prepared an information sheet on O.Reg. 588/17 that provides an overview of the regulatory requirements and deadlines, what this means for your municipality, and OCWA's asset management planning services.  Contact your OCWA Business Development Manager to discuss how we can help your municipality. 
OCWA's "Water Talks" Series Returns 

With the new O.Reg. 588/17 now in effect, it's essential for municipalities to get all the information they can in order to make smart decisions about managing their water and wastewater assets. To support our municipal clients, we will continue to offer our popular seminar on the importance of proper asset management as part of OCWA's "Water Talks" series.  

Our session on finding savings through increased energy efficiency will also return in 2018 and we will be adding new topics as well. Stay tuned for more details, including dates in your area. For further information, please contact your OCWA Business Development Manager.
Appointment: Jim Nardi, acting VP Operations, Peel

OCWA is pleased to announce that Jim Nardi has been appointed acting Vice President, Operations, Peel.  

Previously Regional Hub Manager, South Peel Facilities, Jim will have oversight responsibility for the Region of Peel. 
Creating "Net Zero Energy" Wastewater Plants

net zero energy wastewater facilities.

During last November's Ontario Innovation Week, OCWA co-hosted the Getting to Net Zero leadership forum with the Southern Ontario Water Consortium (SOWC).
 
The workshop brought together municipal leaders, water technology companies and academic experts to answer the question "Can we create 5 net zero energy wastewater facilities in Ontario in the next 5 years?"

OCWA Runs Successful "I Don't Flush" Campaign

As we wrap up the latest phase of our I Don't Flush public education campaign, we're excited that more people than ever know how to protect their pipes by being careful what they put down the drain.
 
Run in conjunction with the Clean Water Foundation, the 2017 I Don't Flush campaign educated the public on proper disposal of fats, oils and grease aka FOG. Previous campaigns focused on unused pharmaceuticals and personal hygiene products.

You may have seen the campaign featured on television, with our spokespeople appearing on shows including Breakfast Television (Toronto), CTV News Barrie and Global TV's The Morning Show. And if you get CHCH-TV Hamilton, look out for our PSA, which will continue running throughout 2018!

Schools Love OCWA's OneWater® Education Program

The first half of this school year has seen hundreds more students through OCWA's OneWater® Education Program! 
 
Aligned with the provincial curriculum for Grade 8 Science, OneWater teaches students about how water and wastewater is treated in their local community, the value of water and how to be good environmental stewards. A highlight is the classroom visit by a local OCWA operator. Here are some of the schools we've recently visited.  We look forward to visiting more classrooms this winter and spring - and to expanding the program to more client communities next school year.
