The Tiger's Roar!
Your Community Brief from Jones High School
Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Principal Kirby working 1:1 with a student last week as we have now entered that part of the 2017-18 school year with the heaviest amount of FLDOE testing (story just below).
Carnegie Hall Performance
The Jones High School Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble traveled to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall on April 7. The Wind Ensemble performed in the National Instrumental Music Festival and the Concert Choir opened and performed in the National Youth Choir Concert. Only three other schools in the country were invited to have their band and chorus perform during the same festival. We were honored to have Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins present for our performances!

On Sunday, April 8, the Concert Choir performed at The Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York City (Rev. Dr. Calvin R. Butts III). Special thanks to Dr. Carl MaultsBy for arranging the special opportunity. Choral Director Andrea Green (Class of 1988) and Band Director Jamaal Nicholas (Class of 2009) along with our entire school community would like to thank everyone who contributed time, talent, and resources to make this once-in-a-lifetime trip a reality for our students.

Watch our Concert Choir's performance at NYC's Abyssinian Baptist Church! You can fast forward to 1:09 if you don't have time to watch the entire service.

Transforming Testing
At JHS we are transforming how we approach testing. Last week, every 9th and 10th grade student met with a member of the administrative team for a pep talk. We reviewed FSA Reading scale scores from the last three years and explained how many points were needed to pass this year. Students felt much better knowing they were closer to passing than they thought.

Members of the administration reviewing students' prior FSA Reading results 1:1 last week

Everyone received an "I CAN, I WILL, I MUST." bracelet, some candy, and positive message to remember during testing.

Here's some of the feedback we received:

"Wow. I had no idea I was so close. My teachers have just always told me I was a Level 2 but I didn't really know what that meant. I only need 12 more points to pass. Now I know I can do it. Thank you." ~ Janyelle, 10th grade

"No way. That's my score? I'm a lot smarter than I thought. I thought I was like 100 points away from passing, but I only need 30. I can definitely pass this year." ~ Jarvis, 9th grade

Enjoy the rest of your week and remember Tigers, "If you see something, say something!"

Did You Know???didyouknow
Teacher Appreciation Week across the United States is May 7-11, 2018

What Do Teachers Make?

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a wealthy business CEO of a large manufacturing company, decided to explain the problem with education today.

He argued, " What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To emphasize his point he said to another  guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you really make?" Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?" She paused for a second, then began.

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor."

"I make kids sit through 50 minutes of class time when their parents can"t make them sit for five minutes without an iPod, Game Cube or Netflix movie download."  She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table, and continued, "You all want to know what I make?"

"I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions."

"I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything."

"I make them read, read, read."

"I make them show all their work in math. They use their God-given brain, not the man-made calculator or laptop."

"I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity."

"I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe."

"I make them understand that if they use the  gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life."

Pausing one last time, Bonnie continued, "Then, when people try to judge me by what  I make, with me knowing money isn't  everything, I can hold my head up high and  pay no attention because they are ignorant. You want to know what I make?"

"I make a difference."

"What do you make, Mr. CEO?"

His jaw dropped, and he was silent. The other dinner guests all smiled, stood up, and applauded.

Enjoy the rest of your week Tigers.
