Dear School of St. Mary Parents,

This past week at the School of St. Mary was indeed a busy one!

Over the weekend, Music Education Services held its Annual Solofest Competition. At this event, students learned solos for their instruments, and, along with a piano accompanist, performed their solos for a judge. Aside from earning some great critiques from the judge, each student also received either a gold, silver, or bronze medal based on their performance. We are proud to announce that these School of St. Mary students were awarded the following:
  • Lizveth Garibay, Flute, Bronze Medal
  • Erin Heeres, Clarinet, Silver Medal
  • Gracie Forlenza, Clarinet, Gold Medal
We are extremely proud of all of our participants and all the preparation that went into their performance. Our winners will receive their medals within the next few weeks and be able to wear them to our final concert of the year in May. These students deserve a round-of-applause!

On Saturday night was our Parents' Association Hats Off to St. Marys event. Thank you to all those  who attended and made the event such a great success. Over the course of the evening, we had entertainment by the O'Hare Irish dancers, bourbon and wine tasting opportunities, along with a silent auction. We appreciate the sense of shared community and the support provided for the School of St. Mary.

The curtain has closed and the reviews are in: Godspell,as performed by our School of St. Mary eighth-grade students, was exceptional! Monday night saw our multi-talented students performing for families and friends. This was followed by an encore performance on Tuesday afternoon for our students and staff in Kindergarten through seventh-grade. Both performances were great opportunities for our students to showcase their many talents, along with all of the hard work and practice put into the performance for their families and friends. Many thanks go out to Roz Fiocchi and Randy Manges, whose time, talent and direction made this musical production possible!

Wednesday saw the School of St. Mary, along with the Women's Guild of St. Mary, host the Senior Citizen Luncheon at the Upper Grade Center. All of our students were able to participate in one way, shape or form to make this event special for all who attended. Our first-, second- and third- grade students decorated placemats for the event; our fourth- graders decorated bags for cookies; our fifth-grade students helped those in attendance play bingo; the students in sixth-grade wrapped silverware; our seventh-grade students served the lunch; and our eighth-graders provided entertainment, by singing songs from Godspell while also assisting with clean-up. Thank you to the women of the Guild, along with our teachers and staff, who ensured everything t ook place without a hitch. What a great team effort!

Thursday afternoon we finally concluded our Catholic Schools Week activities by holding Career  Day for the students at the Upper Grade Center. We welcomed fourteen different professionals to the school to come in and speak with our students about their various careers and experiences. We were able to host professionals from many different fields for our students to listen to and learn more about. Speakers included police officers, doctors, florists, actors, professional athletes, newscasters and more. Our students were able to sign up and select the speakers and careers they wanted to learn more about. Students were able to visit three different speakers over the course of the afternoon. Thank you to Margaret Hogan and Margaret Tazioli, along with Christine Spevacek, for all their hard work finding speakers, preparing for and rescheduling this event. Kudos!

Last night our fourth- and fifth-grade students performed their annual class SING Concert. Our students did a fantastic job singing a selection of songs that they have been working on throughout the school year. Songs selections included hymns, songs about history, rounds as well as harmony songs.  Our students even sang on of my favorite songs, the 50 US States and Capitals, as sunch by the Animaniacs, to the tune of Turkey in the Straw! Our students' and music teacher Randy Manges' hard worka nd efforts paid off as all in attendance were treated to a wonderful concert! Congratulations to all of our students who participated, and thank you to all the families and friends who attended the concert!

We  will be hosting a social media challenge over Spring Break. We are asking that you take a photo of wherever you visit over Spring Break in your Crusaderwear. The photo can be some other state or locale that you may visit over Break, or even just a trip to the local store. Tag it with #lovestmary or submit it to our Director of Marketing, Julia Donohoe ([email protected]). We will then compile the images so we can show how far our Crusader Pride can reach. The grade with the most post submissions will receive a casual day.

Finally, as we move into the last week before Spring Break, please remember to notify our teachers and the office at both Campuses if you are going to be taking an extended trip.

Parent's Association Annual Fund Update
Dear School of St. Mary Families,

We hope the current school year has been full of learning and fun experiences for both you and your families. It is hard to believe the year is over halfway done and we are almost to Spring Break already!
We at the Parents' Association wanted to provide you with an update on the 2018-2019 Annual Fund Fundraising campaign. While the year started off well with high corporate sponsorship contributions and our strongest Giving Tuesday campaign ever, we are still unfortunately very far from our necessary fundraising goal of $330,000, with $127,708.33 raised year-to-date.

As many of you know, the Annual Fund goes to directly support the operations of the school, financial aid for our students and bonuses to support the amazing teachers that work so hard to shape our children day in and day out.

We are writing to ask for your help.

Every dollar counts and we are hoping to garner participation from 100% of our school families. Every donation that goes towards the Annual Fund directly impacts our students and teachers. There are opportunities coming up to help us reach that goal, but we will need the help of ALL of our School of St. Mary community and friends.

There are many different ways to donate to the Annual Fund. One of the ways we hope you will consider is matching gifts. Many corporations sponsor matching gift programs that multiply the impact of
personal contributions made by employees, retirees, and/or spouses. Depending on your employer's
policy, these corporate contributions can match your gifts dollar for dollar, and even double or triple the
value of your initial gift.

Matching gifts will be directed to the same area of support as your personal gift, unless company
policies dictate otherwise. You will be recognized for the total amount contributed, which would include
both your gift and any match. If you have questions or would like assistance with this process, please
contact the Development Office at (847)582-2554. Click  HERE for a partial list of Illinois companies with Matching Gift Administrators.

We know that in the School of St. Mary community anything is possible if we work together. There will also be more fun events in the future so please keep your eyes peeled for announcements for the rest of this school year. Finally, we invite you to join us at our next Parents' Association Meeting Wednesday, May 8th where we will outline the events for next school year and begin planning all the fun fundraising events for the future. If you have any questions about donating to the Annual Fund please reach out to Marketing and Development Director, Julia Donohoe at [email protected].

We look forward to reaching this goal together and thank you for your continued support of our great school!

Sincerely,

Julia Donohoe, Development Director
