PIPELine
Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to PIPELine, the PIPE (Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education) quarterly newsletter!  My vision is for PIPELine to be a platform for sharing information on interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional practice at UCSF.

Since 2010,  we have built a foundation for IPE at UCSF  that provides core education for over 600 UCSF students per year, along with a robust faculty development program for interprofessional teaching.  By working in teams, UCSF will train the next generation of health care professionals to effectively and efficiently deliver 21 st  century care, embodying our commitment to excellence through collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation.

To augment our IPE curriculum in classroom and simulation settings, we are working on expanding interprofessional learning into clinical settings. This step forward allows our health profession students and post-graduate learners to learn collaborative care skills from seasoned health care professionals in the context of patient care delivery and systems improvement initiatives.

My vision for UCSF is to be a national leader in IPE and interprofessional practice and I am excited to work with faculty leaders from each school, health system partners, and staff to make this vision a reality. My work as a primary care physician continues to guide me. I care for many patients who have complex chronic illness and recognize the benefits that interprofessional collaboration with social workers, pharmacists, physical therapists, nutritionists, nurses, and advanced practice nurses can have for patients. The expertise and skills that these other care providers bring is invaluable and essential for providing high quality care, and working with a team also enhances my skill set and satisfaction in my practice.

Thank you for reading and for your interest in IPE and interprofessional practice at UCSF. If you have ideas for IPE or interprofessional practice programs that we should feature in our newsletter or would like to be involved with our work, please reach out to me at maria.wamsley@ucsf.edu .

Coming Soon: Interprofessional Coaching Program
This month, PIPE will initiate the Just In Time Interprofessional Coaching program, pairing interprofessional teachers with an experienced interprofessional faculty colleague to receive coaching based on a real-time teaching observation.

“There are so many advantages to getting peer feedback on our teaching, and yet, it's a rare opportunity, because it's time and resource intensive. This new program is a powerful way to improve our interprofessional teaching,” said Josette Rivera, MD, associate professor of medicine and current School of Medicine lead for interprofessional education. read more
With PIVOT App, Trainees Build
IPE Knowledge Together Over Time
In spring 2018, Jennifer Mandal, MD, Leslie Floren, PharmD, and colleagues launched the first interprofessional pilot of the PIVOT (Practice Improvement Using Virtual Online Training) app, pairing 16 third-year medical students with third- and fourth-year pharmacy students.

“PIVOT is an exciting, innovative new platform for us to explore because it offers clinically relevant cases to students, but allows them to practice modern skills,” said Mandal. read more
