There is no question that St. John's is going through a transformation of growth and new energy.  It is time to celebrate this important turnaround.  Much of our recent success can be attributed to Rev. Hancock and her leadership.  This is a casual and fun event!

  • St. John's Grounds Cleanup Day: Saturday, April 28th, starting @ 8:00 a.m. until ?
The Men's Group is organizing a 'campus' cleanup day and all parishioners are encouraged to come and help. We will have some simple breakfast food to get everyone started and some lunch for those that can also work the afternoon shift. We will also have beverages.

The grounds of St. John's are really starting to look good. However, with some of the recent storm damage etc. we have much debris to clear out and take to West Ox. We will also be spreading fresh mulch to various trees and flower beds. We will be working around the historic church, the cemetery, as well as the Mt. Gilead Green.

What to bring:
  • Gloves
  • Rakes
  • Trimmers (hedge and string)
  • Wheel Barrows
  • Pick up trucks
The Men's group will have all other supplies to get the various tasks done. In order for us to have the right amount of materials and food/beverage for the day, please RSVP to Jim Elliott     [email protected]
  •  "An Honest Conversation With the Community About the Opioid Crisis"
The opioid crisis isn't just a phase or a rite of passage. It is a real danger. Epiphany Episcopal Church will host this community conversation on Saturday, April 28 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM at their church at 3301 Hidden Meadow Drive in Herndon (located at the corner of Fairfax County Parkway and Franklin Farm Road). Facilitated conversations will be held with representatives from the Fairfax County Police, fire and rescue, the public schools and community services. This is especially designed for students is grades 7-12 and adults. There is no cost to attend but registration is required.   https://epiphanyec.org/occc/
  • Congratulations!!!
Congratulations go to Sam Cameron, Gray Jones and Peter Heller who were confirmed by Bishop Jones last Sunday. Many thanks go to Lisa Heller for organizing the reception for the bishop and to all who brought food. It was a wonderful day!
  • Because of your generosity....
We collected $1478 for Bishop Jones' discretionary fund. He will send this money to a missionary in Guatemala City, Greg Lowden, who is working to improve the lives of those living near the city garbage dump, who go through the garbage to collect things they can sell. Many thanks go to all who contributed so generously.

We were recently able to pay an additional $880 toward the principal of our building loan. If  others would like to help "pay down the loan", you can use the Debt Reduction envelopes that are in your pledge envelope packets.
  •  Did you know......
- Lindsay Jones is planning to join a week long mission trip to Haiti this summer with youth and adults from Church of the Epiphany, Herndon. All youth receive a $200 voucher from the diocese when they are confirmed to help with the expenses of going on a mission trip. Lindsay was confirmed in 2016.

- Craig Staresinich has been letting his beard grow for a reason.  He and his wife, Nita Amar, are registered to attend the Charles W.  Howard Santa Claus School in October 2018 to learn about the "Heart of Santa". Craig's goal is for him and Nita (Ms. Claus) to distribute gifts to children in homeless shelters in the area.  He hopes to coordinate with the shelter management to get lists of children's first names with some idea of their "Christmas List" wishes for the big day.
So, if you see him lectoring at a service, he's not trying to look biblical, just trying to "look like" Santa in a small way.  He does admit he's much thinner than Santa but say's he plans to purchase a padded suit to go under the Santa suit. (Ministry comes in many different forms!)
  • Free "shredding" event to support Western Fairfax Christian Ministries
Thrivent Financial in partnership with WGTS 91.9 is holding a "Shred" Hunger event this Friday, April 27, 2018, from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  The shredding event is open to the public - you are welcome to bring 1 or 2 shopping bags of sensitive documents to the mobile shredding truck to be shredded for free.  The shredding event will be held at the Giant Food at Kings Park Shopping Center at the intersection of Burke Lake Road and Braddock Road.  As part of the event, food donations will be taken for the food pantries at WFCM and ECHO.
  • Pentecost is May 20
Sunday, May 20 is Pentecost, which is 50 days after Easter when the disciples were empowered to spread the gospel to all nations. In the past, we have had people who speak different languages read the gospel at the same time, so there is a cacophony of voices. If you speak a foreign language and you would be willing to participate in the reading of the gospel, please let Carol know as soon as possible.

The First Reading:
A cts 8:26-40
The Lord prepares an Ethiopian eunuch to understand the gospel and prepares Philip to convey it. Philip obeys and a rapid conversion results.

The Psalm:

The Epistle:
1 John 4:7-21
True love is forged in daily decisions oriented to self-sacrifice. God's great sacrifice of his Son dictates the terms of love for all time. May we surrender ourselves to the transforming power of practicing this love.

The Gospel:
John 15:1-8
Whence comes your nourishment? Where is your spring of energy planted? Know this: God's well is deep and plentiful, and being grafted into his vine will produce great fruit in you.

Let Go
Living life with open arms, letting go of the plans and designs we have for our own lives, we trust that God is working through us, enabling us to become the people God created us to be. We trust that good things will come to us, even if some good things aren't always what we have in mind.
