A Message from MANNA's Community Outreach Manager

Greetings!
My name is Carrie Wagner and I am the Community Outreach Manager at MANNA FoodBank, and I oversee our FNS (Food and Nutrition Services) outreach and our Food Helpline. Thank you for all you do to serve our neighbors in need. As you well know, unemployment and food insecurity are at an all-time high, and it will take us working together to provide the various resources needed. The majority of people who now qualify for FNS benefits (also known as SNAP), are not accessing those benefits because they may not know their eligibility, or they do not know how to apply.
We are here to help! MANNA's Food Helpline assists over 1,000 people per month over the phone in several ways:
- Food stamp applications and submission to DSS offices in all NC counties.
- Referrals to food pantries, markets and meals
- Referrals to other needed resources
MANNA would like to better serve the people in your communities, and you are the link between our Helpline and your neighbors in need. There are several ways you can be that link.
1) Distribute and/or post Helpline materials (both printed and electronic)
2) Become a Referral Partner with MANNA. This is as simple as asking your clients if they would like to receive a call from MANNA to learn more about FNS (SNAP) benefits, and then emailing us the referral contact information.
3) Connect us with other service organizations in your communities that would potentially be good Referral Partners to our Helpline.
Next steps:
1) Let your zone coordinator know if you would like to receive a packet of Helpline cards and pull-tab flyers. We will mail them to you.
2) Let us know if you have interest in becoming a Referral Partner. If so, you can reach out directly to me. In the upcoming months, will be doing a brief webinar training on FNS benefits, and how to collect and submit referrals to our Helpline.

MANNA Policy Update:
Masks & Social Distancing Required
Effective immediately: MANNA has made it our policy to require masks when interacting with our team
:
- Partner agencies are required to wear masks anytime they are onsite at MANNA or interacting with MANNA staff and volunteers in any capacity.
- Masks are required when picking up from MANNA, including in MANNA's parking lot.
- Masks are required during mobile deliveries, including MANNA Express.
- Due to the current statewide ordinance, all staff and volunteers at partner agencies are required to wear masks during food distributions, when serving meals, and at all times when interacting with the public.
- In addition, we require the proper social distancing of 6 feet. Social distancing, washing hands, and wearing masks are the only known ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
If a partner agency refuses to wear a mask, a MANNA representative will need to leave the food in your parking lot for contactless delivery. If your parking lot is not conducive for food delivery (gravel or unsanitary), we will not be able to make the delivery until agency representatives agree to wear masks.
Our mask pickup and delivery requirement is not dependent on the Governor's current mask ordinance, it will remain in effect until cases trend downwards and our MANNA leadership team votes to amend the policy.

Agencies still must place their orders 5 business days prior to pickup or delivery.

: We distribute food to the community on the 1st or 2nd Wednesday of each month from 11:30am - 1:00pm, or until food runs out.
Monthly Number of Clients Served
: Increased to 200-300 people since the start of the pandemic.
Why do you do this work?
We are the combined strength of three churches, Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, Robbinsville United Methodist Church and Stecoah Baptist Church.
According to the data, before Graham fellowship was born, child food insecurity in Graham County was 30%. After five years it is down to 25%. We hope to get it to zero and much quicker than 1% per year. The reason why I am involved with food distribution is for two reasons. One is because Jesus tells us to feed the hungry, the other is I believe everyone should have access to good, healthy food.

REMINDERS:
Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.
Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.

Order Confirmation Email
To ensure a quality experience for you, our Partner Agency, we will be adjusting our confirmation email process. You will now receive an email a few days after submitting an order to confirm dry product. You will receive another email a few days before your order is picked up or delivered to confirm perishable items. What's SAM? SAM is an acronym for State Appropriated Money and it is a state funded nutritional food program. Although the name has changed, the program is still the same!
These products are available to order at no cost, so be sure to take advantage of this great program!

AMY Wellness Foundation
AMY Wellness Foundation will be accepting Letters of Intent on a rolling monthly basis. The Legacy Foundation also opened their opened their year-round grant cycle on
May 8!
Funding is available for Capacity Building and Collaborative Planning.
Addressing food insecurity is one of AMY's priorities. They fund programs in Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties.

*Remember that most grants require a mid-term progress report. Keeping your commitments to the requirements of the grant funding terms will greatly improve their chances of getting another grant in the future.
