October 2018: What's New at Frogtown Farm?
Greetings from the farm!

October has proven to be a cold, wet, and windy month so far! We have already reached below-freezing temperatures overnight, and many of our crops are not pleased with that weather. Harvesting is slowing down, and we are now cover-cropping the entire farm. The farm will look much different by the end of this month!

We hosted our final Community Farm Night and Market Saturday events this past week, and are feeling full of gratitude for the wonderful community that surrounds us. While our regular programming is over, we have one more community get-together and fundraiser this week that you can read about below.

We hope you enjoy reading about this month's news from the farm. Thank you for being a part of our community this season!

Peace,

Frogtown Farm Staff
Up on the Farm
Before the farm crew planted late season greens, we first practiced something called "occultation," which you can see in the photo on the left. Occultation involves covering ground with an opaque tarp for 1-2 weeks so that any weeds die out before we plant the new crop. It's a passive way to prepare the ground for planting and reduce the labor needed to keep the plot weed-free. Another win for organic farming!
Pints For a Purpose
You can support the farm by attending Pints for a Purpose at Sociable Cider Werks on THIS Thursday, October 18th from 4-11pm.

For every pint purchased during that time, $2 will go to Frogtown Farm! Staff members will be at the event and would love to see you there.

Harvest Fest Tomato Judging Results
Event attendees judged over 30 varieties of tomatoes at this year's Harvest Fest, almost entirely supplied by UMN's student farm Cornercopia. Here are the top five varieties, as decided by 157 voters:

  1. Purple Cherokee
  2. Cherokee Green
  3. Matt's Wild Cherry
  4. Pineapple Pig
  5. Glitter

Thanks to all who came to Harvest Fest and voted for their favorite tomato!
