Urinary incontinence is a very common yet under-reported, under-recognized, and under-reported geriatric syndrome. It is unfortunately associated with a wide range of medical, emotional, and psychosocial harms that can very negatively affect a patient's well-being and quality of life. Active screening for urinary incontinence in older adults is key as many older adults falsely believe that incontinence is a normal part of aging and cannot be treated. If we don't ask, they won't tell!
In this talk, we will discuss an individualized approach to the diagnosis, investigation, and management of urinary incontinence in older adults. The focus will be on medical causes of incontinence and medical approaches (i.e., lifestyle, behavioural, and pharmacological) to treatment.
