 Afterschool for All Challenge 2018
April 18 and 19 marked the 17th annual Afterschool for All Challenge, when afterschool supporters from around the country join together to remind our nation's leaders why afterschool programs are so critical for youth, families, and communities. In one day, we met face-to-face with 300 members of Congress or their staff and thousands of Americans logged more than 8,000 calls and emails to Congress, all to urge Congress to keep open the afterschool and summer programs funded by grants from 21st Century Community Learning Centers, CCDBG, Corporation for National and Community Service and more! Thanks to the offices of Senator Todd Young, Congressman Andre Carson, Congressman Todd Rokita and Sentor Joe Donnelly for meeting with our delegation including IAN, AYS, Inc and the Indiana State Alliance of YMCA's!

The 2018 Lights On Afterschool Poster Contest is Here!
The Lights On Afterschool poster contest is officially open, and this year the Afterschool Alliance is changing up the theme to reflect how youth see themselves and their futures because of their afterschool program!
The Afterschool Alliance is asking afterschool artists to consider what they are experiencing in afterschool and how it might shape their future. Kids should think about the prompt, "From Afterschool to..." and provide a drawing that shows their potential future self.

Applications for Day of Service Grants
Serve Indiana is a voice for service and volunteerism in the state. Therefore, mini-grants are offered to provide resources to coordinate Day of Service projects. The program is to demonstrate the power of service as a solution to community needs. For 2018 The Department of Workforce Development is partnering with Serve Indiana to allow department employees to participate in a Day of Service and serve in their community. Due April 30.

Indiana Humanities
Through its Quantum Leap thematic initiative, Indiana Humanities is encouraging Hoosiers to explore the spirit of possibility and problem solving that occurs when we bridge science, technology, engineering, math and medicine with the humanities. Quantum Leap Grants will allow organizations to invent their own programs that explore the intersection of STEM and the humanities. Indiana Humanities is especially eager to support experimental ideas that not only combine STEM and the humanities but also fuse together formats and methods in unexpected and creative ways.

National Geographic and the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an annual global competition for students, designed to inspire creative thinking about science.
Students, ages 13 to 18, from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit an original video, no more than 3 minutes in length, that brings to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, fundamental physics or mathematics. The submissions are judged on the student's ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in the most engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways.
The prizes are:
$250,000 college scholarship for the winning student
$50,000 teacher prize for the winning student's teacher
$100,000 state-of-the-art science lab for the winning student's school

The Clif Bar Family Foundation awards small grants for general organizational support as well as funding for specific projects. Priority is given to applicants that: Address our funding priorities from a holistic perspective:

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grants
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is offering grants of up to $4,000 to schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations to help students who are reading below grade level. Grant funding can be used to assist with purchasing new technology, equipment, books, software, and materials that will expand literacy initiatives in programs. Walmart Community Grant Program
The Community Grant Program awards grants ranging from $250 to $2,500 through each of our facilities (Walmart Stores, Sam's Clubs, and Logistics Facilities). Eligible nonprofit organizations must operate on the local level (or be an affiliate/chapter of a larger organization that operates locally) and directly benefit the service area of the facility from which they are requesting funding. The ASM Materials Education Foundation sponsors 20 annual grants for teachers. Each grant has a value of $500. The purpose of these grants is to enhance awareness of materials science and the role that materials scientists play in society. With a network of local Chapters across North America, ASM members are willing to work closely with local teachers to develop and implement these lessons. The Charitable Contributions Committee is charged with overseeing charitable giving and encouraging decentralization of charitable giving so that the greatest impact is where Costco's employees and members live and work. Afterschool & STEM: System-Building Evaluation 2016 (INCLUDES INDIANA RESEARCH!)
This evaluation is among the first on a large scale to measure the impact of afterschool programs on students' STEM-related attitudes and social-emotional/21st-century skills. The primary goals of this work were (1) to examine levels of change in youth outcomes among programs receiving resources and training support from system-building states; (2) to inform on national trends related to STEM learning, such as gender or grade differences in science interest; and (3) to link STEM program quality with student outcomes and facilitator beliefs. https://www.thepearinstitute.org/publications

1st Annual Human Trafficking Statewide Training Conference

he day's events include a keynote introduction by a human trafficking survivor turned advocate, Aubrey Lloyd followed by workshops, lunch and a survivor panel with guest Heather Sewell and Tebogo (Tebby) Kaisara. They are both survivors of human trafficking who are willing to share their story in hopes to enlighten and help make providers more aware of signs so frequently overlooked. This conference offers three tracks specific for law enforcement, healthcare providers and educators. Magnify Learning: PBL Workshops
June 2018 Open Workshops: June 25-28, 2018
This June Magnify Learning will offer two 4-day open enrollment sessions on Project Based Learning professional development for K-16 educators, instructional coaches, and administrators. Sessions will be held June 25-28 in two Indiana locations: Indianapolis and Columbus. University of Indianapolis will be hosting the Indianapolis workshop. Columbus Signature Academy New Tech will be hosting the Columbus workshop. At each of the workshops, the daily hours will be from 8 am to 3 pm. Each workshop is led by facilitators who have been PBL certified and who have PBL classroom experience. School groups (including administrators) are encouraged to attend in order to work together toward the establishment of collaborative PBL systems designed to meet their particular school culture and needs. Upon the successful completion of each 4-day workshop, participants will receive a certificate for earning 28 Professional Growth Points.

New Resource on Engaging Out-of-School Time Programs in Quality Improvement Systems
Taking a cross-sector approach can be an effective strategy to engage out-of-school time (OST) programs in quality improvement systems. Last year, NCASE engaged cross-sector planning teams in an OST collaboration on topics including: readiness and stages of change in building cross-sector partnerships; quality rating improvement system participation and incentives; leadership, technical assistance, and continuous quality improvement; and strengthening adult-child interactions and instructional quality. This practice brief was subsequently developed, featuring examples from Georgia and Wisconsin. It is particularly relevant for state-level professionals as well as training and technical assistance providers. More HERE.

Supporting Families Experiencing Homelessness: Requirements and Resources
The presentation and recording from a recent NCASE webinar on the topic of homelessness is one of the resources shared in the NCASE Resource Library, which is a collection of tools, information, and examples of promising practices. The webinar was co-facilitated by colleagues from the National Center on Child Care Subsidy Innovation and Accountability and the Child Care State Capacity Building Center. During this interactive session, participants explored requirements in the CCDBG Act in regard to services to families experiencing or at risk for homelessness, shared innovative state strategies to implement requirements, and identified resources available to states and child care providers. Google Applied Digital Skills
Google has an exciting new digital skills curriculum focused on helping high school aged afterschool learners develop critical job and life skills using digital tools. It's called Applied Digital Skills, and they've just launched a pilot that we've been invited to participate in. Google is seeking application for schools, districts and educators to join the pilot to use its digital literacy curriculum and provide feedback on the curriculum. If you want hands-on support in bringing digital literacy to your learners, and an opportunity to help shape the digital literacy curriculum for hundreds of thousands of afterschool learners, then apply to be part of the pilot through this form as soon as possible. The pilot will run from February through March, so apply now! Afterschool educators, program coordinators and schools in the United States are all welcome to apply. The estimated time commitment is as little as one hour with your high school age afterschool learners.

Established in 2011 to support and promote the activities of organizations in the greater Indianapolis area that enrich cultural life by celebrating cultural expression and encourage understanding and appreciation for different cultures. Qualifying community organizations may apply to receive funding to support their international or cultural event in grant awards ranging from $500-$2,000. The Fund is supported by a generous grant from the Indianapolis Foundation with additional support from the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation.
Accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for environmental service-learning projects through its GreenWorks! grants program, which is designed to help students make their schools greener and healthier by, for example, implementing a recycling program, conserving water and energy, improving air quality, or establishing a school garden or outdoor classrooms and integrating these projects into the curriculum.
Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to support environmental projects that demonstrate service-learning, exemplify student voice, and involve at least one community partner. To be eligible, projects must secure at least 50 percent in matching funds (in-kind acceptable).

The NEA Foundation is inviting applications for its Learning and Leadership Grants program. The program provides support to public school teachers, public education support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education through grants to individuals to fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences such as summer institutes or action research; or to groups for collegial study (including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for new faculty or staff). To be eligible, applicants must be a public school educator in grades Pre-K-12; a public school education support professional; or faculty and staff members at a public institution of higher education.
