As we celebrate the birthday of Maria Montessori on August 31, we are reminded of the tremendous contribution she made to education. Born 148 years ago, Montessori was trained not as an educator, but rather as a medical doctor who later studied philosophy, psychology, and anthropology. Dr. Montessori viewed education as an “aid to life” serving the development of the whole child, and integrating the spiritual and the intellectual. She recognized that the way to creating a peaceful world was through the child – work that earned her three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Every fall St. Catherine’s offers the  Montessori Journey , a two-part education event to give parents a hands-on opportunity to experience the work in the classroom at every level. Join us on Friday evening, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 for this year’s journey and discovery. Space is limited, so contact Emily Blackman at  eblackman@stcathmont.org to reserve a spot.

ADVANCING THE MISSION
Sociables have moved to Spring this year! With the Gala this fall, the majority of Sociables events will begin in January. Sign-Up Day for winter Sociables will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019 in the Gym. However, there will be a few select events in December to delight you for the holiday season. Stay tuned for more details to come!

Do you have a fun musical or crafting idea for a party that would be a hit with parents or kids? Do you have a delicious idea for a themed meal? Perhaps a ladies night or a sporting event?

Please contact Sociables Chairs Edith Napoleon or Sabina Vizinat to discuss your idea, they'll help you make it happen.

PSO Spotlight: Friends of the Library
Friends of the Library supports the needs of the Sister Edna Ann Herbert Library and SCM Library Manager Sarah Lewis. Weekly Library Work Days will begin on Tuesday, September 4 after drop-off. Every Tuesday morning, parents will check in Primary books, laminate materials, shelve books, and perform other jobs needed to help prepare the library for student use.

This year, in addition to the Tuesday Work Days, parents are encouraged to come help in the library any morning or on Friday afternoons before 2:15 PM dismissal - even if they just have a few minutes to spare. Our students are avid readers and researchers, and there are always books to shelve or shelf reading to be done!

PSO Friends of Athletics
Join the newest PSO committee, Friends of Athletics, and help support the needs of the After-School Sports program and SCM’s student athletes. Stop by the Friends of Athletics table at the Welcome Back Parent Meeting on September 7 to learn more and join the committee.
