A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
When I was a kid, Purim was a "balagan" (Hebrew for a crazy mess). We were dressed in old Halloween costumes, or cheapish costumes of Mordecai, Haman, or Esther. We listened to the Megillah and yelled "Boo" and twisted our groggers every time we heard Haman's name. There was so much noise that it was actually impossible to hear the Megillah. We ate Hamantaschen and candy and ran around like the little "Vilde Chayas" (wild animals) we were. It was noisy, hot, and crowded. In short, for a kid, it was the best time.
As an adult, our Purim celebration was no less of a balagan, but it was focused on getting Sammi (our daughter) dressed and ready to hear the Megillah and waive her Grogger, and eat Hamantaschen.
With Purim coming this coming Wednesday evening, here is a quick review. The holiday has four main Mitzvot:
1) The reading of the Megillah 2) The festive Purim meal 3) Sending gifts 4) Gifts to the poor
Luckily, all of these Mitzvot (and more) will be covered at our PPPP - Purim Pizza Pasta Party on Wednesday evening. In addition to good food and fresh baked Hamantashen, if you dress in a costume you will have a chance to win a prize! The Megillah reading will be fun and interactive. Memories are certain to be created.
A 5th Mitzvah for Purim is simply to be happy and have fun. Join us and you will be guaranteed to smile. I hope to see you at 6:00 pm. The cost is $15.00 per person or $30.00 per family.
Below is a brief summary of the story of Purim. As always, if you have questions or comments, please feel free to email me or to call me.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Purim Sameach - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
The summarized plot and themes of "the whole Megillah."
The Purim story is the Book of Esther; which is a part of the Ketuvim or Writings (also called the Hagiographa), the third section of Tanakh [the Hebrew Bible]. An outline of the Purim story follows:
- King Ahasuerus dethrones Queen Vashti after she refuses to do his bidding.
- Esther (A Jewish woman who has not divulged her Jewish identity) is crowned queen after winning a beauty contest.
- Mordecai (Esther's uncle) uncovers a plot to kill the king and reports it.
- [King Ahasuerus promotes Haman, making him more powerful than all the other officials.]
- Mordecai refuses to bow before Haman (which, it turns out, is not a smart decision)
Haman seeks to destroy all of the Jews after his run-in with Mordecai.
- Mordecai appeals to Esther to save her people. At first she refuses, but Mordecai convinces her that it is her destiny. Esther approaches King Ahasuerus and invites him and Haman to a banquet.
- Mordecai is honored for having saved the king's life. Esther entertains the king and Haman, and invites them to a second banquet.
- Esther pleads for her people at the second banquet. She accuses Haman.
- The king grants Esther's request and condemns Haman to die on the gallows that he built for the Jews.
- The Jews defend themselves throughout Persia [against those following out the earlier decree to destroy the Jews].
- The holiday of Purim is established and Mordecai advances to a position of importance.
The Book of Esther describes the life and lot of the Jewish people throughout history in an alien and hostile world. Our continuing story is one in which evil people attempt to harm us or destroy us and we must use all of our energy and wit to protect ourselves and our mission, which is to make this world a better place.

PARTNERING WITH THE LBI LIBRARY
|
We join the Library for a most interesting program in honor of Women's History Month.
"Women, Feminism, and Islam"
Monday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library
217 S. Central Ave., Surf City, NJ 08008
Speaker:
Dr. Sylvia Chan-Malik, Assistant Professor in the Departments of American and Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University.
How often do you hear the words "Islam" and "feminism" together? Perhaps a better question is - how often should you hear those two words together? Stereotypes and perspectives about Islam sometimes include the notion of the "Poor Muslim Woman" and do not acknowledge any developments in feminism or political activism. In this session, the common notion of the oppression of Islamic women and the movement of Islamic feminism as well as a general discussion of gender and women's rights will help participants further their understanding of Islam and feminism.
This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Island Library and the Jewish Community Center of LBI.
This program is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

"Sabbath Remembrance"
is the Shabbat immediately preceding Purim. Deuteronomy 25:17-19, describing the attack by Amalek, is
