with Mary Maisch

Did you know you can create your own book cloth? Come to the upcoming NBG meeting to learn how simple muslin can be transformed into book cloth using methyl cellulose to stabilize the fabric, and acrylic washes, Sumi ink, and permanent markers to add color and pattern. At the meeting you will make a piece of book cloth large enough to use on a spine (as in photo above), or on a small book cover.

Please bring the following:
  • Brushes of various sizes, small to medium, round, flat, pointed (calligraphy brushes are especially useful)
  • Other mark makers such as permanent markers with brush tipsA piece of smooth cardboard or mat board (minimum 9 x 12") - for example, the back of a drawing pad
  • Paper towels
  • Hair dryer (to share with others)
  • Apron (optional)

STUDIO SESSION
Book Cloth & Board Basics
with Mary Maisch

Saturday, March 16, 2019
12 - 4pm, NBG Studio
$40 members $60 non-members
$10 materials fee
Limited to 10 participants

Do you have drawers full of beautiful book cloth that you are a little afraid to use? Did you make book cloth at our March meeting and wonder what to do with it? This beginning level class is meant to help you get started with cutting cover boards and covering them with book cloth. We will make a basic book board covering model, cut and wrap two boards in book cloth, then glue in a blank concertina sheet that you can fill with content later, and learn how to make an inset for cover art as we prepare a flat spine case binding. Book boards and a variety of book cloth will be provided.

More information and registration here.

WORKSHOP
Contemporary Limp Binding
with Ashley Thayer

$60 members $75 non-members

This timeless book structure has been around since the Middle Ages, getting its name from its flexible animal skin covers. Using historic limp bindings as our inspiration, we will make our books using Khadi paper in lieu of vellum, learn how to work traditional end bands, and sew the text block over leather supports. The leather is then laced through the cover, making this is a non-adhesive structure that utilizes many techniques that can be applied to a variety of bindings. Come learn all about this amazingly versatile piece of codex history!

If Only...a fine store is closing!

The Guild has forged several close business and institutional partnerships over the years and none has been more valued than our relationship with If Only...a fine store. Their owners, Rebecca Morse and Georjean Seeliger, announced the store's closing earlier this month, coinciding with their 21st anniversary in business. We all wish them well as they go on to other creative pursuits and exciting adventures.

For the past several years If Only has been a reliable source of bookmaking tools for the book artists of Fairbanks. Thank you, If Only, for all the Teflon bone folders, graduated metal edges, paste brushes, micro spatulas and other must-have tools you have made available right here in Fairbanks!

If Only has also sponsored a Celebration of Handmade Books on the First Friday of November for the past five years. At those special events Guild members shared their handmade books with the public, offering them for sale, while providing demonstrations of binding techniques. Thank you, If Only, for giving us the opportunity to show our Fairbanks community what the Northwoods Book Arts Guild is all about.

The Guild will miss If Only not only as a source of fine tools and materials, but also the inspiration and friendship we've shared.

Thank you, If Only! You truly have been a fine store!
