New Year Greetings from AGP Chairman

Bobby Ingram, AGP Chairman

Dear AGP Members and Friends,

The Alabama Germany Partnership wishes you a healthy, successful, and happy New Year. We have every confidence that 2019 will be an outstanding year for cross-border collaboration and commerce between Germany and Alabama, but first, we need to thank our outgoing Chair Dr. Anna Gramberg for her accomplishments over the last two years. The successes of 2017 and 2018 will be challenging to surpass, however, I am looking forward to working with AGP's Executive Director Tine Hoffmeister and our outstanding Board of Directors, and we have outlined an exciting and ambitious calendar for 2019. Here are a few examples:
  • Our 21st AGP Annual Celebration Dinner will be held Thursday, March 7, at Regions Field in Birmingham.
  • Company Tours
  • AGP Study Trip to Germany (2019 will be in Berlin and Hamburg among other locations)
  • German Business Committee information sharing opportunities
  • Young Professionals events around the state
  • Networking events
  • Culinary events
  • Culture and Language seminars
  • Increased focus on connecting businesses with students (internship, co-op, and apprenticeship programs)
  • New focus on strengthening connectivity between businesses and educational institutions (events at University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Alabama-Huntsville, etc.)
We are also continuously expanding our collaboration with the German American Chamber of Commerce South to pursue new opportunities for our members.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the events to network, learn, and have fun- auf ein erfolgreiches neues Jahr!

Bobby Ingram
AGP Chairman

Optimizing and Integrating Urban Mobility Networks

AlabamaGermany Partnership is proud to be the local partner with German-American Chamber of Commerce South, for their Transatlantic Dialogue on Sustainable Mobility. Please join us:

Tuesday, February 5, 2019
8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
World Trade Center, Birmingham

Urban public transport is most appealing to city residents when it is planned and operated as a seamless, integrated system. Today's problems in urban mobility are often not due to the lack of an infrastructural basis. Most cities in the US possess a public transport network, but it often services only a few major corridors, in turn leaving entire districts and considerable portions of the population in a 'mobility desert'. Additionally, multi-modal transport networks (e.g. heavy rail, streetcar, and bus lines) are often fragmented and under-serviced and therefore unpredictable and unreliable. Metro areas spanning multiple counties are often burdened by a patchwork of transit systems operating in isolation from one another. That is why one major challenge for US cities looking to cultivate a culture of public transport lies in the optimization and integration of their urban mobility networks.

What are the benefits of participating?
  • Shape the discourse in your city - discuss the future of public transit with local stakeholders
  • Help make your city a hub for economic growth & better quality of life
  • Engage with international experts - discover how urban mobility is managed abroad
  • Become part of a transatlantic exchange - learn about the follow-up delegation trip to Germany

As the Mayor is looking for solutions for the city's high youth unemployment rate, he visited Germany this past fall with visits to abat AG and Evonik (both companies can also be found in Birmingham).

Being a German Expat in Alabama
By Patricia Krueger, International Trainnee, Schnellecke Logistics

All of the sudden you somehow belong into two different worlds.

My Name is Patricia Krueger, I am 27 years old, and I spent more or less my whole life in my hometown of Brunswick, Lower Saxony, in Germany. Since August 2017 however, I have been living and working in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States of America.

How did that happen?
I was always interested in Logistics. I started working in forwarding agencies when I was 16. I have been with Schnellecke Logistics since 2012 and back then I would have never believed that this will lead me to leave Germany one day. In 2014 I decided to study International Logistics Management at German Foreign Trade and Transport Academy (DAV) in Bremen, and for me it was always clear that afterwards I will go back to Schnellecke Logistics. Schnellecke offers an International Trainee Program. Within one year I would get the chance to see four different Schnellecke sites, work in 4 different areas, and one of them would be abroad. This sounded good to me, so I applied for this opportunity. I was chosen for the program, and my second station was Schnellecke Logistics Alabama. Spoiler, I did not get the chance to see the other two stations because I fell in love with Alabama very fast.
