Happy New Year from Leadership Harrisburg Area!  Our board members and staff wish you good health, peace, and happiness in 2019. 
 
As many of you are making resolutions or setting goals for the new year, I ask that you keep Leadership Harrisburg Area in mind.  We might not be able to help you shed the pounds or organize the clutter, but we can certainly help you connect with people in meaningful ways; learn; serve others; make a difference in your community; lead; and grow both personally and professionally.  Here are some ways in which Leadership Harrisburg Area can support your goals and objectives in the new year.

  9. Donate to a worthy charity or charitable cause that you care deeply about.  There are so many in need of support.
  10. Engage with civic minded, aspiring servant leaders by applying for the Community Leadership Series Class of 2020 by May 28.  Applications coming soon.
  11. Join a board of directors or planning committee of a non profit organization.  The Community Caller is full of opportunities each month.
  12. Send someone a thank you note or card to express your gratitude and appreciation.  This one is all on YOU!

Dedicated Helpline Specialists Needed!  Directly impact your community one connection at a time!  Specialists at CONTACT Helpline play a critical role in assisting callers with difficult situations, providing confidential, nonjudgmental, and emotional support on the helpline. We also provide referrals to callers who need assistance with basic needs (food/clothing/housing, etc.).  We are always prepared, 24/7, to take a call from someone that may just need someone to talk to.  You must be 18 years old to participate. Training and apprenticeships are required as well as a background check.  Our next set of training dates begin in January 2019.  For more information, contact Alyson Long, Program Supervisor at  717-652-4987 Ext. 2001.
The Helen M. Simpson Rehab Hospital  is committed to providing an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate environment.  We hold a one hour monthly meeting to review Patient Safety issues affecting the hospital. We are looking for at least two volunteers to attend this meeting. Community volunteers are essential in providing layman viewpoints and ask great questions to assist us in providing excellent patient care. Hope Within Ministries is growing and serving a record number of patients.  Medical patients may wait up to 2-3 weeks to be seen by one of our providers. We want to see each patient in a timely manner to meet their medical needs, for both acute care and health maintenance.  We are looking for individuals in the medical field who would consider serving with us for 1-2 half days a month:  PAs - Physician Assistants;   CRNPs - Nurse Practitioners ;  MDs - Doctor of Medicine and  DOs - Doctor of Osteopathy. Junior Achievement  offers numerous volunteer opportunities!  JA programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. The  LGBT Center  is looking for volunteers!  Do you like people? Don't mind greeting visitors and answering questions? Are you available some daytime hours during the week? Friendly and reliable volunteers are needed to cover our front desk so that the Center can be open during the day! Volunteers are Needed at the Food Pantry!  Since converting The Salvation Army food pantry to a choice shopping model, we have doubled the number of people we are serving each month including larger families and those with specific dietary needs.  We are also providing more fresh foods vs. one-size-fits-all bags of canned goods. W e need volunteers to assist clients with choosing their food items, packing bags, friendly conversation and more.  There's no better 4-hour "team building" experience than friending and feeding! Bretheren Housing Association is looking for new board members  with financial and legal expertise.  BHA provides housing and supportive services to families experiencing homelessness.  BHA is a faith-based organization restoring hope to hurting individuals and families. Grant Opportunity from The Youth Community Development Team of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg! The Youth Community Development Team (YCDT) is a joint project of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg, the Harrisburg School District, and Bishop McDevitt High School.  Each year, approximately 40 high school juniors and seniors from Harrisburg schools are selected to participate in the 9-month YCDT program. The program encompasses leadership development, community service, involvement and community support. The students identify an area of need in the community and raise funds to make an annual grant to a program that addresses those needs. Click here for all the details.
