In this months newsletter, IE SHRM member and IE SHRM Certification Scholarship winner, Jenifer Patton, shares the story of her experience and reaction in successfully passing her SHRM-CP in February 2018.   Learn more of her experience in  her testimony below:
Testimonial of Jenifer Patton, MSHRM, SHRM-CP

Thank you Richard. I am still in disbelief and still shaking. I will definitely be celebrating this evening. I want to thank you because I feel that you effectively helped me in knowing how to break down each and every question by honing in on key words and being able to eliminate unnecessary options. I think along with knowledge and experience without you teaching that technique I don't know if I would have been able to pass. So thank you. For me, I believe the book and repeatedly taking the online test in the SHRM learning system both CP and SCP helped me with the knowledge questions and honestly, I would have to say that my experience helped me answer the situational judgment questions. Being exposed to various management styles, industries, and cultures really helped me answer those questions.

EHRP Resume Critique
Huge Success!

Inland Empire SHRM Chapter kicked off the EHRP 2018 program year with a resume critique, which was a huge success. The EHRP attendees gained valuable insights into creating an attention-grabbing resume. Human Resource Professionals located throughout the Inland Empire volunteered their time to guarantee the attendees received the best advice possible to design their resumes toward a human resource position.

We want to thank our accomplished volunteers for making this such an extraordinary event for the attendees: Patrick Flaherty, CSUSB; Elizabeth Jonas, County of Riverside; Gerry Darden, UCOP; Richard Brager, Diamond Environmental, and of course our Board members who participated in this event.

There are currently 110 EHRP members in all stages of their careers. IE SHRM's objective is to build and strengthen relationships with Emerging HR Professionals and to guide them as they grow in their career. To support this endeavor, we have designed a comprehensive training program to propel these individuals' careers. Our next event, Mock Interviews is scheduled for April 7, 2018. You do not need to be an EHRP member to take advantage of these events. Many of our events offer continuing education credits (CE) for SHRM and HRCI certifications.

If you would like to learn more about the EHRP program, would like to volunteer for the upcoming Mock Interview Event, or to become an EHRP mentor, please contact us at  [email protected].
NLRB Vacates Its Hy-Brand Ruling on Joint Employer Liability
By L. Brent Garrett

On February 25th, the National Labor Relations Board unanimously vacated its December 2017 ruling in Hy-Brand Industrial Contractors, Ltd., which determined standards for establishing joint employer relationships. This action was taken after the NLRB's Inspector General reported that Board member William Emanuel had a conflict of interest when he ruled on the case.
Joint employer relationships impose shared liabilities and bargaining duties upon multiple employers. In Hy-Brand, the Board had noted that whether a company such as a fast-food corporation is a joint employer of workers employed by another company, like one of the chain's franchisees, depends on the degree of control one company has over workers at the other company. Under Hy-Brand, joint liability depended on whether employer entities actually exercised direct and immediate joint control over essential employment terms in a manner that was not limited and routine.

With the HyBrand decision vacated, joint employer status is again governed by the 2015 Browning-Ferris Industries decision, which allows an employer to be found liable as a joint employer if it reserved the right to exercise control over employment terms of another company's employees. Under that Obama-era case, no actual control is needed to establish joint liability.

The relatively lax standard established in Browning-Ferris Industries may be quite temporary. In January, President Trump selected Republican John Ring to serve as the fifth member of the NLRB. If Ring is confirmed by the Senate, the Board will have three Republican and two Democrat members and may issue a ruling in line with Hy-Brand.

An Invitation
Message from Board President, Lora Hassani

I would like to invite you to attend Inland Empire SHRM meetings this year. If you haven't attended an event in a while, come and see what's new with IE SHRM.

Your experience and ideas make all the difference. Our HR community is made stronger by the participation and contributions of our chapter members. We want to hear about the challenges you have faced and successes you have achieved. You may have the answers to a challenge one of your HR peers is currently facing. Sharing what you know with others is essential in building our collective HR knowledge. I invite you to connect with your peers at meetings and events, or on social media, or join the IE SHRM LinkedIn group.

If you have subject matter expertise in a particular area of HR, I invite you to share your knowledge by presenting what you know at a monthly chapter meeting or by writing an article for the IE SHRM newsletter. The information you share may be invaluable to others. Connect with a board member at a monthly meeting or send an email to [email protected].
I invite you to connect with me on LinkedIn or at an IE SHRM meeting.  I look forward to meeting you.
