Happy AmeriCorps Week! We are so lucky to have 4 amazing AmeriCorps members at Literacy Source this year. Marisa, our AmeriCorps VISTA member, just completed her 2 years of dedicated service last month, and Heather, Walt and Ewa (pictured above) will continue on as service members until July 2019. This week is dedicated to showing our gratitude to them as AmeriCorps members. They all work incredibly hard (for a very low stipend!) to serve and support our students. Their roles include that of excellent teachers, advisors, program support, and co-workers. We are so grateful for all that they give to Literacy Source.
Over the course of this week, we featured each of them on our Facebook page. Check out our page to see their answers to a few questions so that you can get to know them better. If you find yourself at the Center over the next week, please join us in thanking them for their service. We will be recruiting new AmeriCorps service members in September 2019 - if you know of anyone who would like to spend a year getting great experience in the field of adult literacy, please spread the word for us! |

Our Annual Breakfast is less than two months away! Please join us on Tuesday, May 7, from 7:30-9 am at Seattle Pacific University, for a morning of inspiring speeches from Literacy Source students as well as superstar librarian Nancy Pearl as she provides a review from her favorite books last year.
There is no cost to attend, but guests are asked to make a donation (suggested minimum $150). The entire cost of the breakfast is underwritten by sponsors, so every dollar given goes directly to providing basic education services to adult learners.
Registration is now open - come on your own, bring friends, or consider being a table captain.

Free Community Event: Challenging "English Only"
|
Join Literacy Source instructors Taiko Aoki-Marcial and Lauren Plitkins as they review research and literature regarding home language use in English instruction.
Gain some practical ideas for how to incorporate students' first language into your work with ESOL learners, and examine how the use of native languages creates more equitable outcomes.
By the end of this event, you will be able to analyze the role of home languages as a tool in creating learning experiences that foster inclusiveness and equity.
The event will take place on Thursday, March 21, from 6-7:30 pm. Please help spread the word in the community by picking up some flyers from Caroline's desk, and register here to reserve a spot for yourself.

Phone Interview Workshop
Calling all volunteers!
We will be offering a Phone Interview Workshop on Tuesday, May 28, from 2-3:30 pm, for students who are seeking employment and would like to hone their phone interviewing skills.
We are looking for volunteers who would like to help out as mock interview partners. Interviews will take place on-site here at Literacy Source. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please contact Meskerem.
Cooking Matters Course
We are looking for volunteers during a six-week
Cooking Matters
course at Literacy Source, focused on healthy cooking skills, nutrition education, and food budgeting. Classes will take place every Thursday of Spring 1 term (March 28 to May 2) from 2-4 pm. Each class is a 3 hour commitment, and is led by a team of 2 volunteers who work alongside a coordinator from Hunger Intervention Program to facilitate fun, lively, interactive, and informative classes. Participants engage in educational activities and help prepare a shared meal at the end of every class.
No professional nutrition or cooking background is required, however it is helpful! For questions, contact Sam.

Current Volunteer Needs and Upcoming Trainings

Citizenship & ESOL
Tutors
Daytime tutors needed to students prepare for the citizenship test and to help with teaching English and basic skills.
2 x 1.5 hrs per week (6 month commitment, flexible times)
Student Assessment Proctors
2-5 hr shifts every 7-10 weeks (daytime or evening)
Sight Words and Phonics Testers
1-3 hr shifts, 2 times every 7-10 weeks (daytime or evening)
Interpreters and Translators
As needed basis (1-3 hrs each time)
Languages needed: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, French, Somali, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese
Outreach Helpers
As needed basis. Mulit-lingual a plus!
One-on-One Tutors
1 x 1.5-2 hrs a week (Thursday afternoon/evening, Saturday late morning/early afternoon).
