Dear Friends,

2019 is here! Whether we welcome the New Year, or whether we dread its coming - it has arrived. One thing is absolutely certain as we look forward to the coming 12 months; it will bring us unknown challenges and unknown opportunities, unforeseen joys and unforeseen sadness.

Given our cultural custom, all of us have at least thought about making a New Year’s resolution – even if we haven’t actually taken the plunge. The New Year’s holiday is a time for us to pause and take stock of our lives. We take the time to think about who we are. We think about how we would like to see our lives change. We take the time to reflect on the past year’s activities and events in our lives. We take the time to think about what we hope the coming year will bring for us. While it is in fact somewhat arbitrary in that our calendar is a human convention, nonetheless, the turn of the calendar from one year to the next has come to symbolize a clean slate for our lives; a new year, therefore, a chance to change things.

Indeed, the practice of making New Year’s resolutions is quite popular with some. Most resolutions that I am familiar with can be characterized as “negative” in  nature. People want to stop some habit or activity they know is harmful or detrimental to their lives: stop smoking, stop over-eating, give up sweets, stop gossiping about others, stop this or that behavior. Then there are the resolutions that can be characterized as “positive” in nature; start exercising, start spending more time with our loved ones, start to read more, etc. The variety and number of resolutions is as great and numerous as there are people making them. Clearly, not everyone makes a specific New Year’s  resolution, nonetheless, the notion of the New Year as a fresh start is widespread.

Interestingly, while the custom of making a New Year’s resolution is a secular one, in fact, it has its root in our Christian faith and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For in Scripture, we are promised a “fresh start” as we seek Jesus as our Lord. In Christ, our sin is “remembered no more.” Our culture has borrowed the very idea of a fresh start from Scripture.

So, as we think about this cultural tradition of seeing the New Year as a fresh start, a new beginning, let us be reminded of one of our great joys as Christian disciples: The opportunity to repent of our sinfulness, to receive forgiveness, and to experience a fresh start through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is true for us as we first begin our Christian journey, and it is true for us throughout our lives. Through our faith in the risen Christ, regard-less of what time of the year it may be according to the calendar, we always have the chance to turn away from thoughts, desires, and  behaviors, which we know in our hearts are not in accord with God’s will and to walk again along the pathway of our Lord. With God, the offer of a fresh start - of a new beginning - is always on the table for us.

So, as the year 2019 unfolds, as we walk through and experience the joys and the sadness of the human exp-erience of our lives in the coming months, let us remember the Good News brought to us by Jesus Christ; that God is always there for us, waiting for us to turn away from our sinfulness, waiting to extend forgiveness, waiting to receive us once more, waiting for us to return home. Let us always choose to turn, to come home, to embrace the forgiveness that is offered!

Happy New Year,

Marc
From the Director of Christian Education & Youth
“Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
for His steadfast love endures forever.”

                                             Psalm 106:1

As we enter the New Year, our hearts are filled with the peace and joy of the Christmas season.
However, as the winter wears on, our joy often gets buried in the challenges of day to day life and peace seems hard to find. Scripture reminds us that God’s love endures forever. We need to hold on to that promise to keep our Christmas joy alive and well in the coming months. What better way to be reminded of God’s love than to be surrounded by His people on a regular basis? As the New Year begins, I encourage you to find your place in the Trinity family and to resolve to be a regular and active participant in the life of the church. There are Small Groups for everyone, Bible studies, WNL, fellowship groups, and a whole host of other ways to connect, to experience God’s presence, and to refill your cup with joy and the peace of Christ so that you can continue to “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”

In Christ’s service,
       Terri

Feasting with Friends Returns!

Feasting with Friends Kick-Off
Sunday, January 27th, 5:00pm

The Fellowship Committee is excited to resume “Feasting with Friends” this year!

So many of our members have asked for it to return! “Feasting with Friends” is a time of informal fellowship in small groups with others in our church family. It can be as simple or as elaborate as each group would like. You can meet for coffee and cake or you can make a standing rib roast with all the extras! It’s a way for you to get to know other people in the church.

Here is how it will work. Once you sign up, the Fellowship Committee will place you in groups of 8 or so. We will meet as a whole group for the first time on Sunday, the 27th of January at 5:00pm at the church with heavy appetizers and you will meet your whole group then. Each person or couple will volunteer to take a month and plan the gathering for your group.

Sign-up sheets will be in Sunday’s bulletins; please sign-up and place the forms in the offering baskets or return them to the office.

Please contact Ryan Huminski for more information at ryanhuminski@att.net .

Ministry Overview 2018

Dr. Mason gave on overview of the church’s ministry during 2018. Highlights of that overview are as follows:

The church will have received, at the end of 2018, 22 new members.

In May 2018, there was a review of the membership of rolls, and as a result of that review, 67 members were removed from the membership rolls.

In 2018, the church lost 6 members due to death.

In May 2018, the church accepted the resignation of its choir director, Leah Wyman. In January 2018, the church added Terri Luzynski as Director Christian Education and Youth.

The WNL attendance of youth and children has improved in 2018 (total of approximately 20). There has also been good attendance for Sunday evening’s middle school and high school youth, with approximately 20 youths in regular attendance.

Church attendance averaged 190 with an average of 73 (35%) at the first service and 122 (65%) at the second service. One Worship average attendance 188.

Financially, most of the year, the church has run a deficit. It is projected that the church is likely to end the year with a deficit of approximately $10,000.

For the year to date, the building fund contributions have exceeded the mortgage payments. The once a year pledge format campaign related to the building fund has been positive versus the prior three (3) year pledge format.

The step-up drives have raised almost $30,000 for the building fund. The Mothers’ Morning Out (MMO) program is going strong (expects 42 children in January – with a wait list of 2 year olds). The MMO board is exploring the idea of expanding the program from two (2) days a week to three (3) days a week next fall. Because of MMO’s strong volunteers, the program has been able to contribute approximately $5,000 to the building fund thus far in 2018.

The pledges thus far received for 2019 are at or slightly better than pledges received on this date in 2017 for 2018.

After the 2018 ministry overview, Jeff Burton made a motion to adjourn the meeting with prayer. Dennis Tavernetti gave the second and the motion passed.

Marc Mason closed the meeting with prayer at 7:18 p.m.

Thank You!
Dear Friends at Trinity,

What a great church! I could feel the prayer support throughout this ordeal! Thanks for the exquisite flowers, too … I was surprised when they weren’t just part of what Visitation does, but I realize there are no flowers to break down in December.

Especial gratitude for the prayers regarding potential infection in my heart; I was really ready to come home! I am blessed to be part of this congregation …

Theresa Horton
Dear Trinity Family,

Thank you for the poinsettia and all the other “goodies” I received during the Christmas season. It helped to brighten my day. Please continue to remember me in your prayers.
Thanks again,
Yours in Christ,
                                    Linda Rosa
Thank you for the coat donations! This amazing donation will help keep Armstrong students warm so they can receive the education they deserve! Thank you again for thinking of Armstrong Elementary during this holiday season.

Thank you,
Jenny Parrot, LMSW School Social Worker
THANK YOU to the very large group of volunteers who turned out for the "Greening of the Church" back in late November. We had a lot of fun making Trinity look beautiful for the Christmas season. There were also donations of food, the beautiful poinsettias, and other resources that are greatly appreciated!

There was quite a crowd who participated in the "Degreening" last week. Some of the Trinity Youth joined in and made it a truly special event. Both occasions were wonderful times of fellowship at Trinity!

                                                                                                       The Worship Committe
Dear Trinity Family,

Thank you for your Christmas gift for our family. We give thanks to God for our Trinity church family, and the many blessings we receive as we together serve God in this place.

                                              Blessings, Marc & Leslie
Welcome to Trinity's Newest Members!
Born in Indiana, Naomi Corsini moved to Miami as a young girl. She grew up, married, and welcomed three daughters there. During her late husband’s illness, the family moved to Naples. Naomi, who was a Delta Airlines service rep, LOVES music and served as chair of volunteers for the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Now, happily remarried, she and her husband are enjoying being near two of her daughters and their families who live here. Welcome aboard Naomi!
Mary René Kirby grew up near Paris Mountain State Park. An animal lover, she provides shelter and care for multiple animals in need. Mary René also owns and loves three active dogs! After a forty year career as a customer service rep for Patterson Dental, she is enjoying retirement with her sister, Pat Everette; her uncle, Homer Montgomery; and her cousin, Nancy Simonton. Lately she is having lots of fun with a cute two-and-a-half year old neighbor named "Jo." Let’s all give a warm Trinity welcome to Miss Kirby!
Winn Williams was born and raised in northern Virginia. Gwen Williams is originally from Missouri but lived in Washington State and is a graduate of Washington State University. Her career was as a federal government agent, and so was Winn's. They married seven years ago in the beautiful National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Now enjoying their home in The Cliffs, Winn is an active golfer and tennis player. Gwen, an avid swimmer, makes good use of the local pool. Winn, a life-long Presbyterian and an elder, has been involved in mission for fifty years. May you both enjoy your future with Trinity!

Youth News!
As one would expect, December was a busy time for Trinity’s Youth! Many of our Youth participated in the Christmas Pageant, we had a great turn-out for the caroling event, and the Christmas Party was crazy fun. We also provided a free afternoon for parents by hosting a Christmas Party for the children. During our Small Group time, we took a closer look at the Christmas story and some of the traditions that have grown around it.

In the New Year, we will take a new look at some familiar Bible passages to explore their meanings in context, rather than as isolated verses. James 1:22, Proverbs 13:24, Jeremiah 29:11, and Philippians will be studied in January. We will also have our first service project of the year at Project Host on Sunday, January 13 th . Please remember that there are only 12 slots available. The sign-up is on the white board in the YWE room.
