   THE CROSS AND COMPASS

"The Hardest Working Council in the Carolinas"

Grand Knight's Report

Merry Christmas!

Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.

Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wisemen. Help us to rise bigger than we are.

Amen.

Volunteer!
We have sent out a short questionnaire to each Brother to find out why people are not volunteering and what we can do to increase participation.  YOU are asked to return the questionnaire quickly so we can implement recommendations as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance for your prompt response!

Virtus!
I once again  every Brother in Our Council, to take the Safe Environment Program training provided by Supreme.  Below is the link and registration code :

The Registration Code is:   kofcsafe

If you have any contact with minors in the Parish or Community, you should also take the Parish and Diocese  Protecting God's Children  workshop. This 2½ hour program is intended to educate volunteers to recognize and prevent sexual abuse. Preregistration is required. Sign up online at  www.virtus.org.

Please advise Bob Desch when you have completed either training.  He is maintaining a database for the Council.

Baby Bottle Campaign News

This year has been a remarkably successful Baby Bottle Campaign. The assistance by our Knights and all St. Matthew volunteers has been phenomenal. The generosity of our St. Matthew parishioners has been outstanding.

We have collected $18,577.60 to date. 742 Baby Bottles have been returned amounting to 57% of those we handed out. The funds collected are almost $1,100 ahead of last year's total. And the Baby Bottle returns rate is 1% better than 2017.

Just think, with a little more effort we could exceed $19,000 this year. Urge everyone to return a Baby Bottle. Or just bring in your loose change in a mason jar or yogurt container, etc.. Bring your contributions to the next K of C meeting or turn them in at the Church office. Thanks again to all, for the unborn and the mothers.

In Election's Wake...

Even though the elections are over, it is more important than ever that Catholics engage in upcoming legislative battles at the state level. "Catholics should definitely be involved with our state affiliate or their state Catholic conferences and figure out what legislation is moving, I would encourage everyone to just find out what is going on in your state and be a voice. Be an advocate for the unborn."

LAMB

As you well know, Charity is the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. In North Carolina, the primary charity that we support is the LAMB Foundation, a charity created by North Carolina Knights more than 40 years ago to assist North Carolinians who have intellectual disabilities (see  www.lambnc.org ).

This year marks the 15th consecutive year that our Council has raised $50,000 or more to support LAMB. Since our Council's inception in 1992, our members have raised more than one million dollars!

Thank you to all our Brother Knights who have helped in this charitable endeavor. If you have not been able to participate, please consider making a personal donation to LAMB. Checks should be made payable to LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc. and mailed to 6420 Rea Rd-A1, suite 312, Charlotte, NC 28277. Or, if you prefer "e-giving" go to the LAMB website - www.lambnc.org - and click on the "Donate" icon.

Thank you for all that you do to help those whom Jesus calls the Least Among My B rothers

May God Bless all Knights,
Bob Desch, PGK

CALLING KNIGHTS TO HELP:

We group our volunteers into 5 teams.  Each team is scheduled to work once every 5 weeks.  Holidays
nights are covered by a volunteer team, so a team may work once every 6 weeks on occasion.  We can use more callers (we can train).  We record all items on a computer and if interested, we can train you for that process also.

There are a few husbands and wives working on a team.  In addition, we have wives that play while their husband works on a team.  If you have a high school or older child that would like to help, we can use them also.   If you work, all items from the Bingo kitchen are free.   This can be a great family team event.

13th Annual Santa's Craft Shop
Sat Dec 1st 8am to 4pm - Main Campus

Our Council provided the food at Santa's Shop Cafe, serving up breakfast croissants, potato patties, hot dogs, chicken salad croissants, drinks and chips.  All-in-all it was a success with many favorable comments.  We hope to make it an annual gift to our Parish!

Many thanks to those who helped!  You made it a success!!

Lumberton Needs YOU - Now More Than Ever after Florence & Michael!

In October of 2016, Hurricane Matthew wiped out Lumberton, NC. It is about 2.5 hours east of Charlotte.  Hundreds of families are still not in their homes, and at the current pace, it's expected to take another 2 years to complete restoring all houses impacted.
  • St. Matthew is helping them, one house at a time, but we need more volunteers like you.
  • This is an ideal activity for families.  Minimum age for children accompanied by a parent  is 14.  All minors must be accompanied by a parent.
  • No Experience Required!  There are many tasks that can be learned on-the-job, or if you do have expertise, we will find a perfect match for your skills.
  • For those volunteers staying overnight there are free accommodations at the United Methodist Church in Lumberton, so no need to make your own arrangements.
  • Volunteers typically arrive Thurs evening and return to Charlotte on Sunday., This is totally flexible.
  • Future dates:
February 21 to 24
March 14 to 17
April 11 to 14
May 16 to 19
